Could someone write, or link to, an idiot's guide to upgrading your video drivers? Aside from being new to laptops, I am also new to nVidia cards in general. With ATi desktop cards, I simply run the ATi removal tool and run the .exe of the new drivers. I have no idea how to cleanly uninstall the current drivers. I also don't know what I need in terms of new drivers, or how to install them properly. I've been digging around laptopvideo2go a bit, but am getting confused by unfamiliar driver numbers, modified INF talk, etc...

Help would be appreciated. Sassing will be tolerated. Evil will be purged. :D

Just go to www.nvidia.com and find the drivers for your card, then download them and install em. Can't really get any easier.

my apologies. perhaps this is restricted to dell computers. they don't apparently support the official nvidia drivers (it boggles my mind)

You can also try the tweaked drivers from www.tweaksrus.com. They work very well.

    Yeah, doesn't get any easier.

basically, go to ADD/REMOVE in the control panel, find ATI uninstaller, and run it. after that, hit RESTART LATER, and go back into the control panel. Now find anything with ATI, and uninstall it. (i find that driver cleaner pro does not fully eliminate all drivers and sometimes causes problems). reboot. go to your new set of drivers and run the installer. DO NOT INSTALL THE CATALYST CONTROL CENTER..it is buggy and very slow, resource hog, etc... instead use ATI Tray Tools ( http://www.guru3d.com/article/atitraytools/189/ )

    reboot.

    should work fine.

    hope this helps

    pb,out.

It is all too easy seriously. Go to tweaksrus.com. Go to "downloads" and you are looking for the Xtreme-G Mobile force drivers. Download the most recent one, it's awesome. Then, for advice on how to install it....there is a tutorial on that site as well.....print it out if you need to. Finally, you'll need to install the Driver Cleaner program....there will be a link for it as well, it's a small download...nothing complicated.

Once you've downloaded the driver and the Driver Cleaner program....just follow the tutorial.....easy peasy.....

tweaksrus is the easiest set of drivers I have found - I've had them installed on my Nvidia laptop I am currently testing, and it has had zero issues for a week. Games are no problem.

I'm not too sure about Nvidia, but Ati has a program called DHmodtool3 that modifies the desktop driver's .inf file to identify mobile videocards.

Maybe someone out there made a program like that for Nvidia?

    Google baby, google.

    Cheers,
    Mike

I assume you have a Dell laptop then? Which model?

http://support.dell.com/support/downloads/index.aspx?c=us&l=en&cs=&s=gen - Go there and enter in your specific model. They will have the latest official Dell supported drivers for your video card. There should also be a step bystep or readme.exe file on how to properly remove and install old/new drivers. It's really easy, requires a reboot or 2, but nothing intense.

Don't use Dell's drivers...they, for lack of a better word, suck. Use the Xtreme-G drivers from tweaksrus.com.......easy to install, excellent performance, plus the ability to overclock!!

I would leave overclocking to the more experienced users, it's jsut my guess but I don't think the thread starter is interested in overclocking. Just running the latest and most up to date drivers. The Dell driver's will work fine, albeit i doubt they let you overclock, but that doesn't mean they "suck".
