While I am tired of all RPG's being fantasy based and in the middle ages (I'd prefer a good sci-fi one - don't mention Mass Effect - been there done that, kind of), but Witcher seems to hold promise.
If I enjoyed Oblivion, would I enjoy The Witcher: Enhanced Edition?
I tried the original demo and was a little taken aback by the poor voice acting and scripts. I hear the Enhanced Edition fixes all that.
I'm not a big RPG guy, but I logged many dozens of hours in Oblivion. Would I enjoy Witcher as much or more?
Appreciate your thoughts.

i do not think u will like witcher anywhere near as much as oblivion
fallout three is coming out in october i bet you will enjoy that more. -
Ah yes. Perhaps just wait for Fallout 3 then. Good point. But I hear such good things about The Witcher. I will perhaps wait for Fallout 3 then bite on that.
Problem is that since my second child is due mid November, I'd like to get in some good game time now if I can, because my free time will be even more limited for many months into 2009 (Starcraft 2 will DEFINITELY be on my must-have list though). -
I liked Oblivion and RPGs in general, and I freaking LOVE The Witcher. While Oblivion has better voice acting for the main characters (Hello? How can you beat a cast featuring Patrick Stewart and Sean Bean?! *swoons*) - I find that I don't find the so-so voice acting in the Witcher to be a distraction anymore once I really got into the story and the quests. I feel that the minor characters are the more interesting ones in the Witcher - whoever voiced Geralt with his monotone voice really annoys me sometimes, especially with the horrendous cheesy lines - but despite all that, I feel really drawn in by the atmosphere, the plot and the supporting cast. I won't spoil anything for you, but I really like how all the characters' subplots and own stories unfold.
As far as combat, they're very different, but I like them both. Once you start adding skill points to Geralt, and learning new moves, and getting the timing of the clicks down, the animations really start coming together.
Can you play through at least chapter 1 on the demo? I got the game free with my graphics card, and it started off a bit slow, but once I got into the first village and finished the first quest, I was completely hooked. If the plot doesn't appeal to you, though, then I'm not sure the enhanced edition will do much to help the voice acting/cheesiness issues in the dialogue. -
Two completely different beasts, Oblivion is more for the sheer scale of the gameworld and its non-linear gameplay, the Witcher better for they more focused plot and the delayed-effect of your decisions during the game. I finished the latter and will give the patched 1.4 a whirl eventually.
As Lattice noted the combat systems are very different, you will either love or hate the timed click-based combat in the Witcher. Once you get used to it though there's no problem to mastering it. -
I didn't like Oblivion personally - dunno why I just think it looked good but the storyline was really shallow and not compelling... so I got bored by this game. On the other hand The Witcher was maybe even the best game of 2007 for me. I'm not a huge RPG fan - I'm rather FPS and racing simulators freak but for me The Wither was simply great. Especially the story which was really amazing and not common in games. Yup, I think the story is the strongest element of this game (graphics are also amazing, but the story is really unique). So I say - go for it. Even if the voice acting sucks sometimes the storyline is amazing and the whole game is thought through. I played the standard version so the enhanced one should be even better. And for me the original Witcher was already better than Oblivion so...

You might still like The Witcher. I loved both games. They're just different styles, that's all.

I may give it a shot. I'm more of a combat simulation, RTS, or FPS guy. But I do enjoy a good RPG now and again. Something to hold me over until FarCry 2, Fallout 3, and Red Alert 3 come out. Man, I think I'm gonna have to wait until next fall to play all these!
-
****.. I hated the Witcher. It isn't at all like Oblivion (which I loved) - fighting is lame with the clicking and the waiting.. Ah well, just not my cup o' tea.
But Fallout 3.. NOW THERE'S A GAME! -
Personally I don't like Witcher. I do believe Oblivion is the best western RPG.
Here are some flaws I noticed while playng Witcher and wouldn't recommend it : First, the story is linear. There is no free roaming, you must follow the story exactly as everyone else. Second, the combat is slow and was quite confusing at first, it's very diffrent from all the other RPG's where all you've gotta do is click click click on the bad guy. Third, the game just doesn't impress you in any way, there is so much potential but it's all flushed down with mediocre gameplay.
If you can, then try it first at your friends computer or watch some video reviews of it. There are cutscenes, sure, the visuals look nice but the overall system and gameplay just bring it all down. I'd suggest waiting for Fallout III or Sacred 2 what are just around corner, or if you really want some gaming then get a console, much larger and better gaming library. -
I have the game (I downloaded it off steam)I think it is great...I love them both and if you liked oblivion this is defintely worth looking into. You can tell the developers but a lot of time, effort, and extrodinary talent into the game..
-
BTW i didn't have the original witcher so I cannot compare the two...but the voice acting is pretty good in the TWEE.

Well, bought it yesterday at Best Buy. It says its enhanced for 64-bit. Do I have to do anything special for 64-bit? First game I've installed on my Vista 64-bit dual boot.
I only installed it, but didn't get a chance to play yet. Also, when clicking on the "Check for Updates" text, it says there's a 1.4 patch, but my version is 1.4.xxx something. The patch is 900+MB large, and there is a language patch too that is something like 600MB. Are these required? I thought that the Enhanced Edition already came with these? -
I have the original witcher. Yes, it is really nothing like oblivion where the point if you can do whatever you want. The Witcher has a very linear story line for the most part but it is a great story. I loved the game. The combat system was quite good once you got the hang of it.
-
The 64-bit enhancement essentially means the game will automatically use as much as RAM as your system has installed to run, it doesn't play too well on systems with less than 2GB and 32-bit OS users had to use a /BCD edit command initially to stop the game from crashing so often when it was first released. -
Good, thanks Harleyquin07.
I'm running it on Vista 64-bit with 4GB RAM. We'll see how it goes!
I like the intro though. Reminds me of my wife right now - being seven months preggers and all -
I love both games.....but I think The Witcher more....the combat system in Witcher is wayyyy to much better than Oblivion, plus the storyline is amazing. Get The Witcher, seriously you would love, plus I hear great things about Witcher Enhanced
-
I also like The Witcher's combat system a little better. Oblivion's is very linear compared to The Witcher's. I felt at odds about it at first but it grew on me. Comboing and fatalities off knockdowns or stuns are good fun.

The game and its 3 runthroughs took me over 2 months to finish, even then I didn't take 3 possible routes to see all of the available flashback scenes. Considering the advent of fallout 3 you might only have enough time to do the one playthrough before the new games come to the market.
If I liked Oblivion - What about Witcher Enhanced Edition?
