I have an Acer 8204wlmi w/ an ATi Mobility Radeon X1600. I installed the desktop driver using the Mobility .net modder to mod it to make it compatible with my laptop.

I have hooked up to my laptop through the DVI port a Samsung 22" Syncmaster 2232bw.

When I go into the Catalyst Control center, and select my laptop's screen (not my huge display), I can choose to have the screen image scaled (preserved aspect ratio), stretched to full screen (distorts aspect ratio), or centered (keeps actual resolution numbers - i.e. - a game running in 800x600 would show up at 800x600 on the screen, with black bars on all four sides)

Now if I choose my large 22" Samsung display, it only gives me the option to scale to fullscreen (destroying the aspect ratio) or to center it (keeping the actual resolution number).

I'm trying to run Crysis in 1280x700 (wider than my 16x10 display), but I can't get it to show the back bars top and bottom, it just stretches it out or centers it. I really want that third option! I've already tried all over drivers... is there a small program to do what I want?

When an option does not appear it usually means you need different drivers. From one revision to the next with nvidia I have seen scaling options come and go.

Look under HDTV support and see if you have something there. Also even if you find the right options on your computer there is a chance you need to go into your monitors scaling options and turn off stretching there too.
