Has anyone looked at this game? Has anyone tried the demo? It looks like quite a bit of fun.

I'll try the demo soon and give you my thoughts.
First Tutorial
All I can say is wow. This game is alot of fun. It's like some plain old RTS but it has more pizazz and color to it. It takes a lot of damn thinking to not get totally smashed or just have a crap economy. Although I don't have a picture of the settings, (sorry) I played at a 1280x800 res with AF on low and everything else on high except for details, which were on medium. I like this game. I'm totally going to buy it.
Sorry about the size. I'll try the military tutorial in a couple days.

I know there aren't many pictures, but I was having too much fun and totally forgot![]()
Second Thoughts
So, after a day of playing the game and thinking about it, I can see that by just diving in and trying to play it, you will get flat out creamed. The tutorial didn't even cover all of the buildings, so once I clicked that I wanted to continue, holy crap so many popped up. It was crazy. But, I still want to get it. It brings me back to the roots of gaming when I was young and makes it a lot of fun.
Here is the demo to the game, off of gamershell. Don't even think about criticizing me.
Battle Tutorial
Well, now I got to fight with soldiers. Pretty fun. The only things that are relatively annoying is when controlling men, you have to click this little deploy button, which then allows you to move them anywhere. Also, the guys don't attack a specific person, it's just an "attack the nearest evil man." The other minor complaint is that when building a barracks (which is big), it only holds one squad of men, which is 36 guys. The same goes for archers as well.
One of the annoying lags in the game was when burning down a village it dropped to about 5 for a few seconds then went back up. And whenever thunder goes off, it drops pretty low as well.
Aside from the complaints, it's alot of fun. Multiplayer (if it has it) would be a huge amount of fun. Single player is fun too, it might be just because the demo is so limited to the amount of things I can do that makes it seem lacking in spots. But, holding up a civilization is tricky, making sure everything is placed correctly and functions with the right amount of people. It will make your brain spin.
Destroying Barbarians is easy at first, but if they're allowed to grow, it would be tricky. They grow just like you grow and they will probably come and bother you eventually. Which always makes the game fun.
Units have two factors in fighting: Morale and Number of men. Obviously, as the number of men goes down the less of a chance your men will all live. Morale is like attack. If you have low morale, the amount of damage you do will go down. And your men lose morale fast (especially when archers are firing on you). In addition to all of that, units have two positions (Archers have Block and Line). Line allows for greater range while Block allows for more damage and lower morale (of the evil guy).
My settings are now here:

Those little red things above their heads mean they have zero morale, and do half damage

Another thing to note is this game is more focused around building a city rather than destroying everyone. Just so you know.![]()

Looks like the Caesar simulation series with Rome: Total War graphics. Let us know how it plays out.
-
Planned to be similar to Total War games, with great battle experience and good graphics. But it will be hard to achieve such a point Total War made.
-
I tried the demo... Was ok, wasn't too impressed with the battles. But again, they were small, plus it was the demo. I might have been doing something wrong, but it seemed like you could only deploy your troops to a "close" point, and then click on a button to make them engage at will...

Iceman0124 More news from nowhere
I liked the demo, though I just spent a few hours on the first tutorial building , brought back the hours upon hours I wasted away on sim city 2000.

Post back when you play it Crimsonman. From the look of the screenshots, historical accuracy wasn't at the top of the list, but maybe its gameplay and how mod-friendly it is will redeem it. I'm currently waiting on EBII and playing EBI until then

Woah, this game is a blast. Dunno how I found it, but I am buying it.
-
anyone sell it in australia crim? looks pretty sweet to me.

It's not out yet. But I'm pretty sure EB will.

Steep learning curve? Keep us posted when you finish the demo and give a preliminary review.

Come on people, post! -
The similarities with Rome: Total War are evident, but from your last post they need to iron out a few wrinkles in the engine and AI.
Technical questions: How big's the demo and do you overclock your HD2600 to play this game? Does the CPU play a big role in determining frame rates (I'm guessing it does). -
Crimsonman Ex NBR member
The demo is only 400 mb, no I don't overclock, and I'm not entirely sure how big of a role the CPU plays. Since in Supreme Commander I get far worse settings.
I just figured out the game has been released, I might buy it. -
Do a full review if you do purchase the game, I might get this in August since I never got the chance to buy RTW and am wondering if this will be a decent alternative.
-
it looks pretty good actually. it sounds like it hasn't been too dumbed down for 12 year olds either.
so to get it straight, its like a ceaser 3/4 mixed with RTW. sounds like it could be awesome. -
Crimsonman Ex NBR member
Yeah, it's like Caesar mixed with a very simple unit control from RTW
-
-
Crimsonman Ex NBR member
Ooh, hooray, I just figured out I can begin the Campaign in the demo, I'll try it later, or tomorrow.
-
Crimsonman Ex NBR member
Wow, that campaign is a girl dog
. Those stupid plebians sit there and complain of what they don't have, then they get pissed, riot and **** you over. It's still fun though
-
Crimsonman Ex NBR member
Well, the release date was 4 days ago, but it hasn't been shipped yet...so... you'll have to wait.
Any requests you would like or questions? -
Full review if possible? Demo gives the impression that it's more of a city simulation clone with more advanced combat mechanics and better graphics than the Caesar series.
-
Crimsonman Ex NBR member
I will do a full review once I actually own the game, I'm stuck with the demo for now.
-
Looking forward to it. Last question I have is whether the game goes for historical accuracy or if it concentrates more on gameplay at the expense of historical details.
-
Looks interesting, I'll look for the demo.
-
Crimsonman Ex NBR member
But all the dates and stuff are real. -
Pity I have to wait until August to pick this up. No chance of getting it locally until I go home for the holidays.
-
Reminds me of Rome:Total War!
-
Crimsonman Ex NBR member
Well, yeah Prasad, it's Imperium Romanum (Roman Empire), it has to maintain a level of credit or the game would get discredited for being inaccurate.
-
Crimsonman Ex NBR member
Alright, people it comes out on the 11th of March, that is tomorrow for me, it will be in Wednesday, so I'll be by the game store Thursday and a review should be up Friday or Saturday.
-
I think it is a lot of fun, just alot of friggin things to worry about. Looks like a lot of fun though. I "bought" it and am seeing if I like it or not.
-
Crimsonman Ex NBR member
It's not out yet. Next week, they keep delaying it and it's pissing me off.
You're right nars, there's so much to do at once. Then all people get pissed off and they want to riot and you're like CRAP!!!!!!!!!! -
and people need to piss off lol, I have tooo many houses or not enough jobs, like efff haha -
Crimsonman Ex NBR member
You have too many houses? I have too few altars and the priest gets all pissed off. And then I'm called an atheist and all that crap. Then they don't have enough food, and all of that crap!!! AH!!!! It's so annoying when barbarians come and destroy stuff. I built my dock in the Caralis mission, then I got that damn card that said, "All of your building built on the water are now destroyed." Bang, dead. So I rebuilt them, and then those stinking barbarians came and destroyed it again AHHH!!!! So annoying. And trying to build a second city is really difficult because they all want stuff too and they drive you crazy dealing with two cities.
-
Sounds like a game with a steep learning curve and far too much micromanagement. Any difficulty levels for this game?
-
Crimsonman Ex NBR member
Yeah, really annoying. That's about it. There isn't TOO much micromanagement, I haven't gotten the hang of the game, once you figure out when and what to build, you'll have the game down.
-
that will take a month of sundays lol
-
Crimsonman Ex NBR member
Yeah, that's true, there are a lot of buildings in the game.
-
Is the city simulation as complex as that found in the Caesar and Sim City series? Or is it the sheer variety of buildings all at once that gets a bit overwhelming?
-
Crimsonman Ex NBR member
Now, I've played Sim City 4, (never Caesar) and there is only one building for one specific action, but it's trying to get all of those buildings constructed in time before the people start whining because there's no toilet to piss in. Sim City 4 has many choices for buildings (e.g. a well, a water tower or a huge well) for water. But in IR, you get a well, or possibly an aqueduct.
-
just played the demo. i am a bit slow with these things, and i don't think i will get it simply because of the crap combat system. the rest is awesome. i did both the missions in the demo, and my problem is not leaving enough room for future buildings, so i get one big sprawling town happening.
-
Crimsonman Ex NBR member
Okay... what do you want me to say? I didn't get the game, the combat system was far too weak for me.
And, usually, the way I do it is to build the main town then go build a little dinky thing and attempt to attach those two together, that's what I try to do. -
yep
otherwise it is an almost perfect game, and is there any more combat other than barbarians?
also the coverage rings. your buildings have to be fully within the circle. but what happens if the guy sleeps on the southern end of his casa and fits into the circle..................................its just annoying. -
Crimsonman Ex NBR member
LOL, I know, it's pretty annoying, and especially when you forget something then you never hear the end of it.

^^ i have to agree. i love having massive stack of boxes and cd/dvd cases lying around
