hey,
i have to buy a laptop very very soon and there is so much confusion regarding the laptop GFx performance...
even the game like counterstrike 1.6 the fps drops in many of the laptop GFX cards...
i recently went to a hands on store n tried the ATI Radeon 4200 the game started @ 100 fps n throwing a smoke the fps dropped to 25 odd..was almost buying it...good tried it before hand..
i recently saw ATI radeon 5470 in sony vaio e series ...wondering if it can play such an old game...
if not this then suggest me a good budget laptop with decent GFX card for this game @ constant 100 fps...all advice are welcome![]()

-
That makes sense because an HD 4200 is not even as good as the top video cards from when CS 1.6 was released, and in some situations completely outclassed. An HD 5470 has roughly 3x the power of the HD 4200.
-
thanks for the reply !!!!yeah so will it give 100 constant frame rates in that sort of a game???
-
I'm not trying to troll or be mean, but why do you need 100+ FPS at all times?
-
masterchef341 The guy from The Notebook
i think you might run into the problem where the budget laptop screen can only display 50-60 fps.
-
100FPS will probably result in screen tearing... you sure you need that much?
-
masterchef341 The guy from The Notebook
youll either need a high quality gaming CRT monitor, which will be hard to find these days... or a new 120 hz display, but that won't be cheap and almost certainly won't exist in any budget laptop.
-
... or just disable vsync, masterchef.
-
masterchef341 The guy from The Notebook
vsync is a software setting. it doesn't magically make a 60hz display capable of displaying more than 60 frames per second.
-
well i play on 100 plus FPS on a 60 hertz screen according to fraps
-
More than 60 fps isnt really needed... The reason to disable vsync is to get rid of the input delay it makes.
-
If your monitor is 60Hz, you will most likely get tearing at frame rates well above 60 FPS. Sure your GPU will be pushing more than like 100 FPS, but your screen will only be able to (fully) refresh 60 times. As for the original topic, another important factor here is the resolution of the screen. IGP often have problems driving games at good frame rates at higher resolutions, but can handle them at lower resolutions. So, if you're going with an integrated and you plan to game... you better get a low resolution screen and be prepared for disappointment.
-
The old source engine has a few bugs were certain actions work better at higher FPS rates, prime example was NS were if you could maintain 100fps you could use a JP forever anyone with less used to have to stop.
-
The 100+ frames are all rendered by the GPU, but they are not all displayed if the screen only displays a new image at a rate of 60 times per second.
-
Have you asked in the WNSIB section? Filling out the form there with your actual budget and desires will get you better results than asking here and just saying the word "budget". Is budget $400? Is it $900?
For a general rule for just CS, I wouldn't get anything lower than a Radeon 5470/GeForce 330. Anything less than that will not get you the performance you want. I'd even look at something even slightly faster in the 5600 level or so in case you want to play anything other than CS. -
1.6 is very old game - i didn't think smokes were a problem after the 8000 series nvidia gpus debuted. if you're looking to get 100 FPS and the only thing bothering you is smokes, dial down on settings for your GPU. i played it on a single mobile 7950gtx and maxed out the game easily.
and as others have said, you won't actually see fluid difference between 60 fps and 100+ fps on a 60 hz screen, other than screen tearing. -
i used to play it fluent on an Pentium 2 400 mhz and a voodo 2. If todays low end GPU's and CPU's are slower than that its really funny
-
At the same settings using the same version of the game, that hardware would not stand a chance against an HD 4200. For CS 1.6, that hardware does not even meet the minimum requirements. Also the HD 4200 is a complete joke. The core is a little more powerful than a Radeon 9800pro, but the 7 year old graphics card still has more memory and over 3x the memory bandwidth. I couldn't play FarCry2 (2008) smoothly with the HD 4200 on absolute minimum settings.

Guys... he's talking about CS 1.6, not Source. I could play that game with a GMA 950 and no lag or low fps, never. It's the HL engine.
-
wow, are there still laptops being made that can't handle cs 1.6 ?
-
Uhm, sure! Offline almost any pc can run it, but online it is actually sometimes sorta tough, especially because servers like to have all kind of text popping up on the screen, and to my experience that lowers FPS.
-
Well, the notebook im typing with right now uses a Intel GMA 4500m, and with the latest intel drivers it still struggles to maintain 30+ fps.
The wierd thing is that it has no problems in L4D, unless the map gets flooded with zombies, because the 2 GHz (Single Core) Celeron cant keep up with it. -
Yes, I am aware.
-
This used to be my favourite fps for many years, I even opted to not buy cs:source and stay with 1.6, good times, had to be one of my most enjoyable games while it was on top. de_ratz was my favourite map.

niffcreature ex computer dyke
The human eye is not capable of seeing much more than 30 fps. of course I know higher fps are to compensate for when more stuff is going on.
LOL makes me think of 'oh crap my retinas are bottlenecking performance'
-
Better upgrade your retinas, then.
-
Different people are sensitive to different framerates. For me in first person shooters I can't tell the difference of any increase after the mid-50's to 60 fps. (The monitor was way higher than 60hz!)
-
Aww come on man! How many times do I have to dispel this false information? Eyes don't see in fps! You can see more than 30, 60 or eve 120 fps!
One of the common reasons why you don't see above 60fps conventionally is because most content is displayed in 60hz screens that cap at such fps. Get a higher refreshrate screen and you will surely notice the difference once you use it.
Higher fps allow more information to be displayed. If eyes only capped at 24fps or 30fps, you would miss on a lot of things happening around you. A lot. -
^ this. even though you can't "see" the frames because of the 60hz the game engine is still running at 100 FPS.
-
Here we go. AGAIN.
-
its clear TS know nothing about FPS thingy.
most laptops still aint got 120Hz screens , and no matter how good the GPU is the max framerate you can get is 60FPS which is capped by the screen refresh rate @ 60Hz
if its between 1fps and 2fps , the difference is noticable
but between 30fps and 60fps , theres no such thing as getting twice as much information . -
masterchef341 The guy from The Notebook
*sigh*
perception and frames per second (or "FPS thingy") is a very complicated issue. in a game like cs 1.6, there is a giant difference between 30 and 60 frames per second. it just "ain't" that simple.
that said, i still am not convinced that having the game calculate more states than can be displayed on the screen is helpful in any way. -
It helps in some game engines. In cod 4 If you are getting 125 FPS you can do jumps that you wouldn't be able to at a lower FPS.
-
Flicker fusion threshold - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
I'll just leave this here.
The next thing we need to do is create a list of 120hz LCD panel laptops. -
And related to that is motion blur, which allows lower framerates like those in movies (~24fps) to look completely smooth, even though 24FPS in static frames like a game does will look like a slideshow.
-
masterchef341 The guy from The Notebook
another point is that motion blur exists in some games as well, and these games tend to have lower tolerable frame rate thresholds. -
it is advantageuos to have more than 125 FPS in COD engines as well as HL engines ( cs1.6).
In the COD engine 125 = higher jump. 250 constant= longer jump + higher rate of fire + better hit registration.
This is very, very much common knowledge to most competitive gamers -- those who play in leagues and such, IE CEVO, etc., -
using top notch hardware to gain advantage over other ppl who use computer with lower specs?
wow ... amazing .. lol -
Everyone that I know that plays CSS and Cs1.6 plays on a machine that gives them ATLEAST a constant 100 FPS... remind you that this isnt against other pub players, but against other very, very good players that play in leagues, which most are pay-to-play.
It is very competitive. Don't kid yourself, or maybe stopping pubbing and play a competitive team? -
Yep. Must be Sunday already.
-
Yes, but the fact that your card is capable of rendering 100fps doesn't make you able to see it on screen. To take advantage of higher FPS, you have to have a screen which at least matches the fps in terms of frame rate.
-
uh .... okay .... so players will 80 fps will sure lost to players with 100+ fps
IMO i still think its a matter of skill , good hardware means you don't have to worry about any external factors such as lag and just focus on the game. -
when you have players of equal skill, the fps advantage will make the difference.
Having 100fps and suck at the game, won't get you anywhere. It's about maxing your possibilities of winning, by making sure that at least everything is working in your favor. -
A lot of this is done on CRT's. I actually just got rid of mine a few weeks ago after not having used it since last october. Now I'm regretting it that I'm gaming again.
-
I think its more about having a stable fps. If you PC cannot handle a constant 100, for instance, but instead is dabbling around at 60-80, it will mean that SOMETIMES it will drop.. Atleast to my experience.. But no, ofcourse they are not sure to lose against those with higher FPS.
Also, bad hardware doesn't cause lag, as lag is network related
-
The problem is with the engine. It ties behavior to the framerate, giving an advantage in hit detection and other updates to people who update their frames more often.
-
Can we stop arguing about framerates and go back to the question in hand? OP go post a form on the WNSIB section with the application filled out so we will be able to help you determine the best laptop for your budget.

thinkpad knows best Notebook Deity
Erase "the budget" and add an "s" to screen... that makes more sense. -
thinkpad knows best Notebook Deity
Hoo boy.. being a perfectionist in games is an oxymoron in some sense, it totally destroy's the "fun" in a game when all you are doing is perfecting everything. -
thats ur little opinion...
'
Anyway in Quake 3 Arena the best players set all their settings to minimum to get max possible FPS. A few thousand FPS is needed there for the best players.
In need of 100 fps constant in counterstrike 1.6 on laptop?
