I understand now. I don't plan on saving my overclock settings permanently, so it looks like the Power Play thing will have to wait. I probably won't need it anyway since I have stealth mode.

And even if I did need it, I would just flash the VBIOS using OC settings that I configure in RBE.

I pray the card works so I don't have to do the flashing.

Question: What can go wrong when I am flashing the VBIOS from Slave to Master? Just so I can be prepared when I have to do it, if I have to.

There is always the possibility of a bad flash, but if you do the checksum(atiflash -cf biosname.rom) to verify that they are the same and proceed when you are 100% sure everything is ok proceed to flash (atiflash -p 0 bioname.rom)

Just make sure you don't lost power or plug/unplug anything from the system until the flash is complete.

Also when you convert a .bin to .rom in RBE you need to rename it to something simple I usually use NBIOS.ROM. (Caps don't matter)

    It auto names it something like this 2D - 300, 405, 0.900 3D - 660, 850, 1.200.rom Very hard name to remember and flash.

Mkelliny, I thank you for all of your help. I should be able to successfully go through with everything when I get the card.

When I do get it, I will post a separate thread showing how I did all the BIOS work.

    +rep to you.

Yes, there actually was once more thing. I think I should have asked it earlier.

But what if I flash the VBIOS using that M88-2 from Slave to Master, and it ends up not working? Like it still doesn't boot? Another way of saying it, would I be screwed if that happened?

Also, if there was an instance where I had to reflash it due to a bad flash, how would I revert back to the older one? The one that was on the card before the Slave to Master flash?

That is why I said to use a USB drive because before the whole flashing process or anything. after it is installed you can dump the VBIOS from the card itself(atiflash -s 0 Biosname.rom) So lets say I wanted to dump my GPU I would type it like this

    atiflash -s 0 gpubios.rom

then after I altered it and changed the values I wanted to I name it NBIOS.rom so i can distinguish between the two.

I do a checksum on each ROM

    So atiflash -cf gpubios.rom

    atiflash -cf nbios.rom

if the numbers match I flash NBIOS.rom.

If you flash it and it is successful and still doesn't work that could mean the GPU is bad, but let's take it one step at a time. Get the card and install it, if all works well(Which I think it will) then flash only if you wanna OC, but dump the VBIOS on the GPU rather than using an externally downloaded rom, using the method above.

So doing a checksum, question on that.

Are you doing a checksum on the old VBIOS and the new VBIOS right before you flash it? That is what I think.

BTW, the card should be here by Saturday of this week, or next week Monday or Tuesday.

Yup I do one on the old one and the new one because I wanna make sure the new one was not corrupted somehow, then I flash.

So you put these files on the USB drive.

    TO Overclock:
    ATIFLASH
    dumped/downloaded VBIOS rom
    New VBIOS rom

To dump the GPU VBIOS from the card you only have:
    ATIFLASH

EDIT: If when the card get's there, and you still are not sure, shoot me a PM.

    So I received the 3870............

NO BRACKET! So now I have to wait another week for the bracket to arrive.

    This had better work.

I am in the process of making a custom bracket for the video card. I already have screws with corresponding threads, so I just have to put them inside a piece of plastic or something like that so they fit with the heatsink.

So I have a bit of a video card problem that I need help diagnosing. Here it is.

Just today, I was playing a game on my system. This game runs flawlessly on high without any slowdowns on my Nvidia 8600m gt. However, here is where I am puzzled. In the middle of when I was playing, the game was interrupted by a crash in video. The screen turned to plain black, and the sound and everything else went on. I could hear things blowing up, but there was no video on the screen.

This led me to believe that the video card was dead. So I took out the 8600m along with its heatsink and fan, then booted the system using the integrated Intel Chipset Video Card. When I booted the system with the Integrated Intel Card, the system's video reappeared.

Putting in the 8600m does not do anything except show a blank screen. So now I have to ask you. What do you think is wrong with it? Is it dead?

If it's dead, where is a place I can recycle it?
