I assume I need to take the foil/black stuff off of it anything else?

Also, the coolant gel on the chip is basically evaporated, so if it is fixed after I bake could I use the card as long as I dont do any gaming or anything graphics intensive or should i wait till i get some more? Thanks

You can either bake it in the oven or use a heatgun at around 200c for 5-10mins. That much heat should be enough to melt the solder, if not go higher.

You only need to heat the gpu die so try insulate the rest of the parts.

There should be existing guides like this here, just search around

And it worked! The card wouldnt even start up all I would get is a black screen but now the card is working again!

Quick question....I noticed when reinstalling the card that the thermal paste has dried up and doesnt look like it is doing anything anymore...can i use windows and surf the internet without the card heating up too much as to cause damage or do i need to wait till I get some more thermal paste on it to do anything. If so, could i game with it or would that be too much. Thanks.

Good to hear. Make sure you clean the old thermal paste out after you baked it

As long as the heatsink is flushly seated to the GPU it shouldnt overheat even without paste but keep an eye on the temps just in case.

Thermal paste is just there to fill the microgaps of air between the heatsink and GPU. As you know air is not a good conductor of heat.

I still recommend ordering the thermal paste now.

You can usually get cheap thermal paste at your local Best Buy for about $10. It's just basic stuff, but most people don't really need anything more than basic.
