    Greetings,

I am about to make a purchase for an Inspiron 1520. I have all the specifications ready except for one thing - the screen resolution. From all of your experiences, which native resolution would look the best on a 15'4 screen:

    1440x900 OR 1280x800 ?

I'll mainly do gaming and watching movies on it. Thank you. I need to make a purchase within 2 hours!

    Personally I think 1280 x 800 is a bit small, so I would say to go with 1440 x 900.

i've seen 1440x900 on a MBP and I think it's pretty good. Although I've also seen 1680x1050 on a friend's e1505, and I liked that as well. Another friend has an e1505 at 1280x800, which did seem a bit small to me.

Personally I'd probably pick 1680x1050 but I think 1440x900 would be fine too.

I've seen 1440x900 called out as the sweet spot for 15.4" size, if its between that and the 1280x800 I would say definitely go with the 1440x900 unless your eyesight is bad.

i went with the largest screen ration (some 1680 on 1080 i think). I do alot of gfx work so i hope its going to help that.

Are the highest res screen worth it?

    wait a second. rethink this.

if your main goal is watching dvd movies and playing video games...

i would get the lower resolution. its REALLY nice to be able to play games in the native resolution of the screen without blur. and 1280x800 is already more than enough to display all of the detail in a dvd...

think about it. higher resolutions are better for some things, but dvd movies and games might actually benefit from the lower resolution...

If you bought a 1440x900 screen, would you be able to play a game in 1280x800 without stretching it? (aka with black borders or something)

You could play in windowed mode if the application allows it.

There should be an option in the drivers to set up black borders instead of stretching to fill up the screen.

Although 1280x800 should be the same 16:10 aspect ratio as 1440x900, so it should fill up just fine.

IMO you should have gone with the 1280X800, just because the games are getting too intensive for a lot of GPU's, so you cant run at a full resolution sometimes. So the smaller the better IMHO.

You made the right choice, don't regret your decision, you will be very very happy, if you ever look at pictures, go on the internet, or pretty much do anything on your computer, you will have that much more information availiable to you at the glance of an eye. I have a (albiet old) laptop with 1024/768, and horizontal scrollbars are pretty much a perminant reality. You will be very happy with your new laptop, I would ALWAYS go with the higher screen res. It is something that absolutely cannot be upgraded, and you can always view something at a lower resolution.

Out of all those sizes, I really prefer 1440x900. 1280x800 is just too small for my personal taste, but my bro is getting the Matte 1280x800

If you got the 1440x900, I'd say it's a good choice. After having used 1280x800 on a 15" for a year, I wish I had have purchased the 1680x1050.

Oh well, hopefully when I buy an Inspiron 1520 for myself.
