Currently I have the HP release of drivers for my 9600 radeon. I'm looking for the performance gains of newer drivers because HP rarley if ever releases new one's. How can I extract only the driver from the install files? If I try to install the new cat 4.12 or any recent ATI drivers it says they can't me installed on my system (because its a notebook) Would I get just as much benifit out of installing the driver over the entire control panel? I do know about the Omega driver's I've installed them and not notice anything other then extra processes running and a new control panel. I'm not only looking for instructions but also share your wisdom and experience to help me decide what will work the best. In case it matters I play DOOM 3, Unreal 2004, War Craft 3, and will probably get HL2 in the future.

As far as I know the easiest way is to use the Dhmod tool , however this only seemed to work upto 4.9. There was a problem with it patching 4.10 & 4.11. I haven't tried it with 4.12, although I'm sure someone over at driverheaven has...they should also have instructions overthere on how to mod these drivers yourself so that they will run on your notebook, its fairly simple i did it for 4.11. However I also have had my notebook complete screw up twice now to the point of needing it repaired, both times coinsided with me stuffing around with the graphics drivers ie instal/uninstall omegas or modded ati's. Thus I say do this at your own risk.

ps I seem to get much better performance outa the offical ASUS ones (based on 4.8s) then any of the other drivers..go figure?

Thanks for the reply, I'm only concerned with best game performance so you saying the stock drivers were best is interesting. Also how did you damage your system to the point of needing repair changing the drivers?

Same question I would like answered. First time happend when I uninstalled a set of omega drivers, as I was having problems with getting doom3 to run, so I figured it maybe a driver issue, this seemed to fix it for a bit but then all games started to crash to the point that I couldn't even run 3dmark01. Tried everything from clean format and fresh instal of xp, so I took it back and they replaced the m/b (although they couldn't find any problems). Didn't know at the time but they put the wrong one back, which worked fine for about a month using omega drivers, then went to upgrade to modded ati ones, and got blue screens of death, again tried everything and after 2weeks and discovering the wrong m/b issue took it back again for another m/b this time the correct one. Now its running very nicely with standard manf. drivers. It may just be a bad coincidence with the omegas but I'm not game to try again to find out.

ps was getting ~9200 in 3dmark01 with omegas and ~9450 with asus drivers (ATI 9600gpu).
now getting ~10,300 with asus while omegas were giving ~9900.
