Hey everyone I followed this post
"Hey everyone.
I was tired of only a mediocre performance of 8600M GT, so I tried to see what can be done to fix it. Thanks to Unwinders great creation I had something to work with -
First, nothing but original drivers (101.xx) are able to overclock - it bums, but not really - you really don't want to fry a mobile chip (and as you will see it isn't necessary). The best scores I was able to get with a modded 163.71 were as follows:
PCMark 05 - 4100
3DMark 05 - 6974
3DMark 06 - 3599
But then I tried to use RT's RVStrap Drivers and set my device id to 8600 GTS
wow! first of all, you can load any (not mobile) drivers on your mobile chip! (no need to hack .inf file and driver is signed)
Here are the tests I got when I loaded 8600 GTS drivers on my 8600M GT card (I did run 3DMark o5 and 06 3 times):
PCMark 05 - 5217
3DMark 03 - 12904
3DMark 05 - 8264 / 8190 / 8317
3DMark 06 - 3904 / 3854 / 3911
I think that it is a tremendous improvement. I also discovered that you can OC 158.xx drivers, but I really didn't see much of an improvement (less then 5% and in some cases even slower - no reason to overcook the gpu and mem)
I also tried new 163.74 drivers from x t r e m e - g, but results were not as good as when using 163.71. I did play bioshock and I've seen the difference. I can now play 1280X756 (wide-screen) at max quality settings and the game is smooth"
Has anyone tried this? I have and now my laptop 8600m GS is known as a desktop 8500 GT and I can install drivers without even using a modified INF! I notice a increase in performance when using desktop drivers as well, maybe just me

All you did was overclock your video card really. Sounds like you replaced your bios with a new one that has higher clocks. Plus doing that is dangerous if you didnt try to see if those clocks are stable first.
Also the new 169.01 drivers allow you to overclock fine so the stock drivers are no longer needed. -
no this isnt overclock vicious, its simply making the laptop believe that the card inside is a desktop card hence I can isntall regular desktop nvdiai drivers without a modded INF like laptopvideo2go
-
you should check your clocks before and after to compare, and make sure, otherwise there would be not much difference in overclocking and doing this.

Thats all the moded inf files do it tell the installer that it supports the moble card, and thus anybody using that method would have the same results as you. -
Actually it goes beyond that a little bit. The 8600 and 8600m are based on the same core more or less. What a manufacturer does is that they design the core on a wafer similar to CPU design. They only design it once as the template, since these wafers are really expensive to make, and can cost hundreds of thousands. But of course other components go into designing a GPU. So they replicate it on all the card's variants. So you have installed drivers that have taken advantage of some of the aspects that were otherwise put to sleep on your card, to make it cheaper and more efficient for its purposes, i.e. being in a laptop.
So other than overclocking, you are using components of the card never meant to be used, and that could pose a problem in the future. It could cause damage and severly reduce laptop performance in the future. It has been seen before, were people use higher end drivers, especially on desktop computers and they ruin their cards or even overheat their FSB, causing damadge to the entire system.
A company creates many drivers for a reason. If anything it would cheaper to create one driver that can be used on all variants. In Nvidia most Forceware releases actually tend to do that, but the reason they allow you to select different cards on the drivers, is because the drivers have different settings for each card. Drivers do not only regulate core speeds. They also regulate communication to the OS, fan control, end user configuration, and communication to other computer components. They also regulate what components of the card should be used. If the driver contantly tried to take advantage of a sleeping component of th GPU, and fail, it could have unpredictable results.
