My new Acer has Intel's 965 chipset (unfortunately), and I recently installed Age of Empires 2 for old time's sake. Problem was that some of the colors were all wrong (the game was still playable), and when I tried to play the game in 1280x800 resolution, which is the native for my laptop, it crashed.

So I thought that updating the drivers would help. Now, of course, the color problems have gotten so bad that the game is unplayable, and it still crashes on 1280x800.

Any tips/tricks, or can I just chalk this up to another round of horrible Intel drivers and try to roll them back to a previous version?

Have you installed any patches for it? That, and trying different drivers is my suggestion.

Try running it in compatibility mode.

Thanks for the help. XP compatibility mode cleared up the messed-up color issue, but the game still crashes in 1280x800 mode. It'll get all the way to beginning a new game, and then crashes to the desktop. All drivers have been updated, and all the newest patches for the game have been installed.

I don't know about the patched version, but I know that in the original release version the only in-game resolution options were 800x600, 1024x768, and 1280x1024. How did you set the resolution to 1280x800? Are you sure you didn't accidentally set it to 1280x1024?

I have the version with the latest patch and it doesn't have 1280x800. You set it to 1280x1024, which is above what your screen can display. No wonder it's crashing.

If you have vista, then yeah, that is known to screw up the colours.

Yep, user error. I just got fixated on the "1280" and ignored the "1024."
