Hi All - can anyone tell me if an Intel Core 2 Duo T7800 2.6 GHz CPU and running twin SLI cards can run a game (with no problems) that is rated as "suitable for Pentium 4 3.0 GHz" - very confused over the actual stated CPU speed and what it is rated as???? The Duo Core CPU and dual SLI cards are in my Tosh X200 Satellite Laptop under Vista Ultimate OS?
The game is Call of Duty - World At War
Thanks, Gemseeker

Your CPU is far more powerful than that P4 3GHz. So it seems you're covered

If you want to see by how much have a look at the cpu benchmark list below.

You machine would probably run even CoD 6 (when it's released, ofc). Your CPU has 2 cores running at 2.6 GHz each - that's roughly 5.2 GHz processing power!
-
Pretty much any Core 2 Duo CPU is better than a P4. A P4 only has one core, while Core 2 Duo has two, so clock speed is not important.

In most tasks you need to multiply the Core 2 speed by 1.8 to get the equivalent P4 speed. ie One core of a 2GHz Core 2 is equivalent to a 3.6GHz P4. And you have two of them.

If World at War is multithreaded then the OP indeed has the equivalent of 2 P4 cores, if it isn't though the OP still meets the CPU requirements comfortably.
-
Your setup should run circles around the minimum requirements of the game.
-
Core 2 Duos blow NetBurst architecture CPUs (Pentium 4 and Pentium D) out of the water.
Of course, you can't add the two core speeds together for an equivalent if the programs you're running aren't multi-threaded. So it's not a 5.2 GHz CPU, just two 2.6 GHz CPUs. -
Remember, Core 2 processors are faster at the same clock speed than previous architectures.
-
It's pretty much as he said, each individual core is faster even though they are clocked less. Considering the Core 2 duo CPU's are about twice as fast per single core clock for clock, I've overclocked a P4 and tested games with it before, even a P4 at 4.2Ghz isn't as fast as a 2.3Ghz core 2 duo and that's on single threaded games like CS:S. There is much more to consider than clock speeds and the amount of CPU cores, that greatly determines the speed of the CPU.
When looking at recent games, since pretty much all are multi-threaded these days, or at least most big name games, think of your CPU as an 8Ghz pentium 4 in terms of performance compared to a P4. -

my old c2d 1.5ghz outperformed my 3.2ghz P4 with hyperthreading.

Most games today are GPU dependent rather than CPU dependent. One game that is CPU clock happy is Microsoft Flight Simulator X. Most other games require a good graphics card.

Newer architecture, more cache, more instructions?

Cool, for netbooks, the Atom N270 is roughly equivalent to an Intel Pentium 4 2.4 GHz CPU.
Thanks for the link BTW. -

Is it?
2mb more than X7900 will make it slower? but X7900 is capable of going upto 3.4 ghz. -
Just because it is capable of going that fast doesn't mean it's tested at that speed.

I had used it in XPS M1730. I can easily overclock it from BIOS.
-
Proper benchmarking for performance comparison is done at stock, non overclocked, speeds.

Its not 3rd party overclock or anything but is official one. As well as if I am getting 3.4 ghz from 2.8 with included warranty on it then who else gonna have a problem with that?

Thanks to all who replied to my call for help re Core 2 duo vs P4

Another question - being addicted to "Area 51" game does anyone know how I can get this running under Vista Ultimate on my Satellite X200 laptop?
Thanks in anticipation. -
It doesn't matter, all the benchmark above are done at the stock clock. Comparing stock clock benchmark to overclocked speed benchmark is not a fair comparison because it is not standardized test. Since overclocking capability varies from CPU to CPU, it is harder to standardize overlocking benchmarks. If it makes you feel better about your purchase: yes, your overclock x7900 will probably out perform the T9300, in benchmark, but with pretty much no real difference in real world usage.

alright..thanks

Since the question has been answered, a mod should close this thread.

Let me just add one thing. The 2.6GHz X7800 is outperforming 2.8GHz X7900. It would be better to compare against the X7800 because something is preventing from X7900 from outperforming the lower clock variant.
Per clock, the Core 2 Duo is in average of 90-95% faster than Pentium 4 with 800MHz FSB and HT. -

Ooh, let me compare the CPUs I've had........
Intel Pentium M 1.6 GHz --------- 372 Passmark CPU Score
AMD Athlon 64 4000+ Mobile ---- 522
AMD Turion x2 TL-56 ----------- 796
AMD Athlon x2 5600+ ---------- 1389
AMD Turion Ultra x2 ZM-82 ----- 1085
Intel Core 2 Duo P8400 ---------1562
Interesting........my current lappy's P8400 beats out the Athlon 5600 I had in my desktop. Nice to see that I've followed Moore's Law, especially those first 4 computers, which were all within a 2 year time frame. I guess I made some good computing decisions most of the time
