i found this laptop which seems to be a pretty good value and am considering jumping on it. what would that CPU and GPU combination do?

I think that it would be cpu limited, but you could always overclock that bad boy. it seems like a good deal.

clockgen says otherwise!
-
It seems like a good deal. My friend has one. The performances disapointed me
A) I was getting the same performances as him in World in Conflict, except me in 1680x1050 and him in 1440x900
B) Mine was loading the maps faster than him (and by a significant margin).
I can't see where the problem comes from.
I'd suggest upgrading the CPU to something like a T9300 -
Yea your CPU limited but considering no other laptop offers an 8800M card below $2000 it really doesn't matter.
Take a look at this review for more info:

He never said he was maxing it, just running it at the same level. Since the c90s has a MUCH more powerfull processor, i tend to think that that will cancel out the 8600m gt and 8800m gts difference
-
so he was not maxing it then? then they are not running it at the same levels...sure if you lower settings its going to be CPU dependant
-
oh man...if this laptop was out the day i got my hp...i would have soooooo bought it. dang timing of laptops is really...not good to say the least.

Well..
Anand called it the Best Midrange Gaming Notebook Ever.
It was a good read. -
frankly im surprised at how short the battery life is. this is my first laptop but only 95 minutes when watching a dvd? that to me sounds dreadful! this is going to be a desktop replacement but im going to be taking it to a lot of places with no outlets and i cant imagine it not running out of batteries basically every day. is this the norm? -
95 minutes sounds pretty good, most 17'' notebooks have terrible battery life
-
if only i could get an 8700 or 8800 in a 15.4 inch, anyone have any idea if this is coming soon?

My auto-detect is Very High 1440x900
Settings
In-game benchmarks
I don't know his exact settings but the had to leave in the middle of the game to lower them down, while the game was still smooth on mine. We have the same FPS tolerancy. (WiC unplayable FPS<8). If changing the CPU for a T9300 gives him 5-10 more FPS, so constant 13+, it would bit about it.
You also have to remember that, except the textures, the main differences between high & very high are physics related, thus the CPU -
hm that suprises me for a mid range gpu.....the only difference between my and your settings are im on 16QSAA and 16AF, i never drop below 18
-
Which drivers are you using? I think my friend still is on 169.04
-
im on 169.09 i think, im going to upgarde to the 174 series, its alot better for my GPU from what other 6831 users have been saying

If you plan on moving a laptop around often, it is much easier going for a 15.4 inch or lower, 17 inch systems make good desktop replacements, but they are often too large to put on your lap or even on a plane seat tray.
Also, with 15.4 inch systems you are starting to see LED backlighting, which will also help battery life somewhat.
The Alienware 15x is the only thing out right now with an 8800m in a 15.4 body, but the price premium is a bit much, I'd wait for Sager or Clevo's offerings in a few months. -
Yup, nvidia is coming up with 55nm cards in the mobile mid-high end Mobile Geforce 9. The 55nm ones are gonna be the 9650M GT, 9800M GT and the 9800M GTS.
http://www.behardware.com/news/9563/nvidia-g94b-and-g96b-in-55nm.html
According to that, it looks like the 9800M GT/S are gonna be the mobile 9600GT -
