Could an Intel GMA handle Engineering S/W like AutoCad, etc.? (Assume that we use the latest GMA Chipset...)

When it comes to 2D drawing creation, it would probably work but just forget about the new 3D display features in AutoCAD 2007.

Also, forget about any 3D applications, that card is just not designed for that.

Its not that bad, if you do simpler things, I had an old dimension 4700 with GMA 900 and it handled autocad 2006 reasonably well

My Mom runs AutoCAD on a slot p3 500Mhz with 192MB of memory and some old matrox video card, it's def. worse than the gma900. She also runs XP home -_-

AutoCAD works fine once it's booted up. She only does 2-d things though, like floorplans.

well it should work we have hp desktops at school with gma 950s in them... but we also have some with radion 9200's so it should work decent... as long as you only do floor plans and stuff like that

of course it will handle it !
im a student in civil engineering last year so we do huge 2d files. 3d have never been used by me yet
i used to use 2006 vrersion on PII 400MHz /448 ram/32 ati video. it handled anything but little bit slow when zooming - thats because of the proccessor.
now i use Core Duo with 1GB 950GMA and it handles 2d perfectly. I tried 3d files of rendered buildings - it runs very smooth !
    you need more RAM.

In general autocad doesn't use the graphics card at all for 3d acceleration. You need a very specific driver for it and I was never able to find it. I haven't tried lately though. So there's mostly no difference if you have a GMA or a gforce 7950

    Why cant you just buy a notebook with a 7300, 7400, x300, x1400?

It would yield much better performance in AutoCad 2007.

As has been mentioned before, if you are doing 2D then the GMA is ok (3D is manageable but with about 3 frames per second  ) but if you end up using something like inventor then you had better get a good graphics card.
