I definately would never even think of a GMA 950, or any of intel's IGP's for use with 3D programs. At the very minimum you should look for something with a dedicated video card. Any dedicated nVidia or ATI based video cards should run the programs sufficiently.

It will be fine for 2D AutoCAD but a little slow if you start rendering 3D objects. You will just have to be patient and wait for 20 seconds while something renders (how long will depend on the complexity of the object).

And if you have Vista get 2GB ram at least. You can upgrade it your self at a later time though.

Note that CAD and some other rendering programs are also quite CPU intensive rather than just GPU intensive.

If you plan on running complex 3d renders, I'd suggest upgrading both CPU and GPU. Although GPU will bottleneck at this point, the CPU will eventually not be enough for complex renderings.

Just one question - where did you find a computer with the Intel 950GMA graphics?
    That's old...

Someone said at least a X4500 - I'd say at least an X3100 (that would be last generation)

I know I had some 3D graphics in Maple 9.5 on an Intel 915GM/GMS on my old Medion laptop - it worked, but nor brilliantly.

But the current Intel Chipset is the X4500, the last generation is the X3100

Also, search the web a bit on user experience.

Don't do it. My old laptop had an intel 950 video chipset and a core 2 duo, and I tried to run Autodesk inventor on it. It was too slow for my liking. Get a laptop with at least an Nvidia 9100 or an ATI 3200. They are pretty cheap now a days. They can be gotten with $500.
