Assuming you're talking about either the Geforce 640M or the 640M LE, they'll be noticeably more powerful than the HD4000.

The problem is going to be bandwidth, integrated cards are getting better all the time but they lack the processing power of a dedicated card at a higher resolution.

In your case the 640M will destroy the HD4000.

Thanks guys, I also heard that with integrated cards you cannot upgrade them to better ones, but with the mobile ones you can.

Not entirely true. Some dedicated cards (for example, the 660m on my laptop) are soldered onto the motherboard.

And it's generally recommended to consider buying a better GPU in the first place rather than count on a future upgrade. It's neither easy nor cheap, especially compared to the desktop upgrade.

outside of some high end gaming units, portable workstations and the occasional random laptop very few laptops can upgrade the GPU, other than a few MSI, Sager/Clevo, Alienware m17/m18, and Presision/elitebook workstations I can think of very few with MXM replaceable video cards

Other than the ones you mentioned, the only ones i can think of are older models.

Yeah, it's a better choice than interated graphics, but it won't be running games past low/some medium settings. You would be a whole lot better off going up market to the 650m gddr5 or the 660m. Even those cards aren't total powerhouses, but they can run pretty much anything at medium settings and some games at high

GT630M is not that bad, especially compared to the integrated HD4000. In the market zone he is apparently looking in for his next laptop, the GT630M is pretty much the best he can get without sacrificing on some other important parts.

I didn't see him post a figure on how much he'd like to spend, so I wasn't sure. I just wanted to point out that sometimes you can get better hardware for not a whole lot of money or sacrifices.

    Yeah, mmkay.

640m LE even will produce double the framerates in most cases than the HD 4000. 640m will put 2-3 times the FPS.

what is the display resolution of the laptop you are planning to buy?

If it's 1080p, I'd try to find something along the lines of a 650m or 7750m if you can. If it's 1366x768, you will be fine with a weaker card; however, I'm not quite sure how the HD4000 compares to the 630m
