Intel graphic card ain't designed for gaming, even for casual gamers, a system with discrete graphic card is highly recommended.

What games is he going to play? Some might run on integrated graphics, but as lidowxx said, discrete beats intel integrated any day of the week.
If you could fill out the FAQ we might be able to help your brother find something more suitable to his needs.

how casual is casual? give some examples and people here may know whats best to recommend. But if casual means Facebook flash games or Command and Conquer, then its fine.

My friends wife has a two year old Sony VAIO with Intel integrated graphics and it comfortably plays casual games with ease. She likes PopCap games like Zuma, Plants vs Zombies and those games you have to find items.

Intel HD graphics is basically for web, video and ultra light gaming. I just picked up a Vostro V13 yesterday and it's primary use will be Web, Youtube and ultra light gaming.

intel Hd graphics can run any game from 2006 fine (Half life 2 etc)
it can even run Bioshock on very low resolution and very low details.
You guys know nothing about intel hd graphics.
I used to have one, there was even a program that used to mask the real GPU so games could start, and back in the day all the processing was done in software on intel GPUs so if you had a powerful processor you could play a lot of games.
Intel HD graphics is GREAT for casual gaming,
I play serious sam and elder scrools morowing on an intel 82845G (2004ish integrated videocard) on a laptop!
    not talking about max payne.
so I say it again Intel HD graphics will be GREAT FOR YOUR NEEDS!

Bioshock on very low resolution and very low details sounds painful to look at...

In all seriousness though, it really depends on what your definition of "casual gaming" is. If that means games that are from quite a while back once in a while, then intel integrated graphics should be fine. However, if he wants to play ANY CURRENT GAME AT ALL without it being unenjoyable, I strongly urge you to go buy a laptop with at least a mid-class discrete graphics card.

The phrase "casual gaming" really needs to be clarified. If this means that your brother will occasionally play 3D games with big budgets, then Intel graphics are not enough even if the games are from a couple of years ago. But if it means flash games or the type of thing that comes packaged with Windows, then the Intel graphics are more than adequate.

Casual Gaming usually means simple game, not-demanding games.
Plants vs Zombies is Considered a Casual Game, so is Bejeweled ,
and they both run on 10 year old hardware...
read: Casual game - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
If the Original Poster meant this than Intel HD is fine, if he meant that he won't use it mainly for gaming but will desire at times to play some games than Intel HD will do just fine!
People ran oblivion on netbooks (via patches)
you can run in on Intel Hd as well.
if you want pretty graphics and beast hardware you are not a casual gamer that's it!

Will intel hd graphics work with Civilization 5?
My son is looking at a laptop to use for school. 8th grade.
We are looking at getting him Lenovo IdeaPad Z560 15.6’’ Laptop, Intel Core i5 CPU, 4GB, 500GB, DVD Burner which has Intel HD graphics.
He has an xbox 360 for most games but likes civilization.
    Will the computer suffice?
    Thanks.

No way, Civ 5 is not even running on a GF330 with everything turned on.
It really needs some GPU power...either get something with a HD5650, or GF435 or above...
OR: play Civ4 which is currently much better and runs on anything. (apart from netbooks)

Actually, Civ 5 is supposed to scale well enough to run on current integrated graphics on very low settings.

At the risk of sounding dim (why not?), would you mind explaining it in a bit more detail so I can find a "sensible" laptop option?

i.e., I really don't know gf is except from assuming it is geoforce or what HD 5650 is. Thanks for your help and patience for an older dude.

I think he meant to say GT, but yes, he was referring to NVidia's GeForce graphics cards. The ATi Mobility Radeon HD 5650 is a graphics card made by AMD, and in general offers the best price/performance ratio for midrange cards this year. We would need to know the budget you're looking at, as well as the model he wants, to best help you.

Which is what I would have suggested were a non-restrictive budget given. No point in making the thread if it won't really get anywhere.

And yet the misinformation on these forums continue. I have an arrandale notebook with intel integrated graphics, and it handles ALL of my old games just fine. The performance in fact is great. I can even play Battlefield 2/2142 at high resolution on medium settings just fine. To say that they aren't good enough for even casual gaming is incorrect.

I wouldn't say playing a 5 year old game on medium settings means it is fit for casual gaming...

How about two-year-old game? I know for a fact that L4D1 runs at 1024x768 on at least medium.

And again, it technically meets the minimum requirement for integrated graphics, so, at least theoretically, it should run on lowest settings.

Have you tried it? It runs fine at low resolution on Intel GMA HD. No it doesn't look spectacular but the game is the same.

No I haven't, so no, my opinion is not from fact-based evidence. I'm just shallow when it comes to games so that's really where my opinion comes from :p .

I will admit though, the Intel HD integrated graphics are pretty damn powerful, compared to past integrated.
