    Intel HD Graphics 3000 vs AMD Radeon HD 6490M

    I was wondering if these two graphics cards have the same performance despite the GDDR RAM in the Radeon.

    If for instance I buy a laptop with the Intel HD Graphics 3000 and just add 1GB RAM to the laptop will it perform the same if I just got a laptop with the AMD Radeon HD 6490M graphics card?

    Do you mean the Macbook Pro? I don't think there's another laptop in existence that makes use of the odd 6490m.

    I guess there's the DV6t, but the 6770m is a $25 upgrade that anyone would be completely mad out of their mind to pass up. On the other hand, Apple charges $300.

    Not a Macbook.. I'm comparing graphics between the Dell Latitude E5520 and the HP Probook 5430s.
    I really like the Latitude and it's mostly likely I'll buy it, but the graphics are bugging me.. I don't intend to play a lot of games on this laptop but I would like to play at least some old games. Will the Intel HD Graphics 3000 be up for the job?

    For old games and even new games (albeit at some reduced settings), the Intel graphics will be just fine. It's actually a pretty capable integrated card.

    its not a very good card, its about as fast as the old gt 330m, specially the lower clocked versions that were in the vaio Z and the macbooks

    Intel HD graphics is good for DX10. AMD 5000 / 6000 series cards are DX11 capable.

    HD3000 is just the worse GPU possible. If you do only Office and some light stuff no problem, but today even web can push a card to the max. Go for AMD card. The difference is significative.

    The HD3000 is actually pretty capable compared to past iGPUs. It can handle pretty much anything on the web easily, and even play some modern games at low settings and low resolutions.

    But yeah, the 6490m is better, though it's still pretty weak.

    Should this iGPU make me rethink about buying a Dell Latitude E5520? Sadly this laptop doesn't have any other graphics card available :/

    I can run Sanctioned Renegades, a silly free fps game 1920x1080 max settings pretty good. And this is with my X220, which isn't able to Turbo much since it has heat issues. Battlefield 2142 runs great, I am downloading BFBC2 which I only expect to run at low settings. I can say that my 512MB Nvidia GT240 (desktop, with an E6400) is somewhat more capable than my i5-2410m laptop, but not by much. At any rate the very low end dedicated graphics are only going to be barely faster.

    Also you might want to look into the "eGPU experiences" thread.

    HD3000 is roughly 38% slower than my gpu (9600m Gt GDDR3) on stock clocks if the benchmarks are to be taken into account.

    While that's not exactly 'stellar', it's also not terrible.
    For an integrated gpu, performance is good.

    And since you mentioned you'll be playing mostly old games anyways (define 'old'), you shouldn't have issues, hypothetically.

    Not quite - all standard voltage Sandy Bridge CPUs have the HD3000 component clocked to 650 mhz base - 1200 max turbo boost. If you get a low voltage processor like in the samsung series 9 or in the macbook air, the HD3000 will be down clocked to 350 mhz base - 1000 turbo boost.

    Amount of Video Ram does not affect performance directly. It's only used for storing textures for processing. I think that HD3000 does not have enough processing power to render quickly enough to ever make use of more than 256-512 mb of video ram.
