i know this probably isn't the right section for this, but i couldn't figure out where to put it  so here it is.

would a laptop w/ an intel T7500 w/ an integrated GMA X3100 vid card be enough to run matlab well? (2gb of ram too)

    thanks

Isn't MatLab like statistics software? If so I'd imagine so...

MatLab is much more than statistics software. It is capable crippling the fastest of computers depending on the algorithms running. Thus, system requirements are more dependent on how you intend to use MatLab. For the average user, the T7500 is probably sufficient. However, if you plan to solve large multi-variable systems, then the more power the better.

thanks, i guess my question also goes towards whether the x3100 graphics card will be enough for an electrical engineering student.. if i have to do any simulations or anything like that. what does it mean for a graphics card to be "fully OpenGL compliant?"

I have matlab installed on mine and it works nice (i dont go to 3d area, just 2d and a lot of processing)

I have one t7500 and it support matlab nice, but dont expect much if the your working in 3d area with x3100...

yes it will.. There is nothing with the graphic card that should concern you. This is a good cpu

To put it simply, it means you'll need to shell out big money for one of the nVidia Quadro FX line of GPU's.

You see, gaming-centric GPU's, like GeForce and Radeon series support certain extensions of the OpenGL library, mainly the game-centric ones. However, that will obviously result in problems if those GPU's are trying to run softwares that uses other extensions of the OpenGL libraries. The Quadro FX series of GPU has the best OpenGL compliancy (when compared to game-centric cards), and it's definitely the way to go. However, they are considerably pricey.

ATi's FireGL series will also work, but I haven't seen any of them in mobile platforms.

EDIT: Oh, by the way, the X3100 is no where near being OpenGL compliant ;). It's not going to cut it.

It will run just fine. I'm using MATLAB on my T7100 with NVIDIA 8600M GT.

I used MATLAB in my P4 with Geforce4 MX440..........it ran quite well......I see not reason for it to work well in T7500 with X3100.........dont worry it will work fine...........

Matlab works very very well on GMA950 though it can do 3D simulation, dont bother with integrated GPU. My old notebook, dell i6000 with GMA950 run it very well. Make sure you bump your RAM 2GB.

openGL is a software that establish link betn animation and real world picture.....
....For instance....in games like FarCry.....all graphic image was not rendered to make the whole game............The took real life 3D picture....and feed the data in an OpenGL software whose job is to change the real 3D pic Cartesian co-ordinate in a digital coordinate in the gaming environment.......but when they need to put non-real stuff (non-photographic) into a game(like alien spacecraft)........only then they use graphics rendering software......

If u just think of using openGL....X3100 or 8400MGS/Quadro equivalent card will be enough but if ur thinking of image rendering and wish o get big file to be renderend in short time.........then go for 8700/Quadro equivalent

I use matlab on my T61p with the Intel 7500 doing financial modeling and I think it's pretty smooth.
