Just ordered a new laptop - really excited for it. It has the Intel GMA X3100. Can this play HL2 even with "low" settings at 1440x900?

My old laptop, 2 times removed (haha) with a Pentium M 1.4 and a 32MB ATI Radeon 9000 dedicated could play it, so i'm thinking the x3100 almost 4 years later might be an improvment?

When i play Half-Life2 with the GMA 950 it crashes every ~5 minutes, even on lowest settings.

The X3100 is not the GMA950, so it's not very helpful to post about that. After all, how would you like if you posted asking 'How does the 8600GT run this game?' and then someone posts saying 'My old Geforce 4 doesn't run it...'

The X3100 can play Half Life 2.

well i can see where fifafreak was trying to say, and it was that he thought the GMA950 was similar to the X3100, just as I thought my GMA945 was similar also. BTW my 945 crashes in hte first 3-5 also on super low settings.

the x3100 should be able to run half life 2 on low settings. doubtful 1440x900 though.

the x3100 not wanting to run half life 2 in 1440x900 is a fundamental problem with the general weakness of integrated gpu's combined with ultra low memory bandwidth they suffer from. no driver will help that.

however, unlike previous integrated graphics solution (ESPECIALLY intel ones), i wouldn't be surprised if you could get half life 2 running really smooth and stable. no word on resolution or graphics settings.

yeah it MIGHT play it but at lower resolutions, expect 1024x768 or under. and it could probably run it on mid to low but who knows until someone actually plays it and benchmarks.

Sorry i should clarify my post, it was kind of in response to Fusionburns post about how he said his old intel extreme graphics could play it. I would like to know how you did that btw.

I know the difference between the X3100 and the 950, i was just like half-asleep when i posted :p

I would say put the res at like 800X600, and then work your way up. Just the be 100 PERCENT SURE that it doesnt crash, because if you set the Res up too high, and it crashes... Its a pain to set the launch options for it to start in a different resolution.
