i wouldn't even expect decent fps's on crysis. On an x3100? pfft. Nevermind.

I just don't get it why when I update to the latest X3100 drivers the CPU just KEEPS on working hard even when in idle mode doing nothing. CPU's always at 100% usage. That with version 15 when I revert to V14 CPU usage's 1-4%. WHat gives? Have any of you observed this crap? Can you suggest how can i keep the cpu from working hard? I have vista ultimatex64.

Any answers would be appreciated.

We had that CPU load issue before in this thread. E.g. read here (and before that the problem description):
    http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?p=4193663#post4193663

run msconfig and disable igfxpers.exe in autostart. You may want to verify first whether it's this particular task that steals CPU cycles. I don't really know what this task does - my guess is that it's related to memorizing which display had which resolution when you connected it the last time (like TMM). However I don't know for sure - at least you can disable it without a big functionality impact.

I got an Intel GMA X3100 on the Santa Rosa (965) platform.

Ever since I updated the drivers to 7.15.10.1608, I can't seem to adjust my display brightness when running off battery power, regardless of power or performance settings.

Anyone else having this problem, or is it just me?

    I don't think so,...
I have seen people run crysis on win7 and on x3100 but i haven't comfirmed it... I will see if i could borrow a copy from my friend to test this game on x3100.

NOTE: EVERY GAME RUNS,,,.. BUT RUNS SLOW...

YUP, I got the same problem but only thing is,.. I can't even control my brightness. What i Do with sony vaio is go to the little tray near the time and go to advance and set the brightness to low. But thats the software brightness, i want the hardware brightness which i can't load on win7

Is there any way to load the drivers that control my brightness? There are special buttons for brightness but it does not work.

Those with brightness problems: I don't know which notebook you have and don't know what your BIOS offers to you. However I have a Dell XPS M1330 and it has a BIOS option with the maximum brightness level for the LDVS independently for AC and DC operation. Anyway: With some intel driver revision I noticed I can't set the brightness level beyond the level set in the BIOS. Certain crashes and such reset those brightness levels. In this case I have to enter the BIOS and set those values back to much such that I gain the full spectrum of brightness control in Windows back. Don't know whether this applies to you as well.

    --

I noticed new X3100 drivers in the Desktop Board section:
    v15.11.5.1624 for Vista 32 Bit released 1/12/2009
    v15.11.5.64.1624 for Vista 64 Bit released 1/12/2009

As usual with those Desktop versions: There's no changelog included. Also keep in mind the v15.11.x branch is only a minor revision higher than the v15.11.4 released 11/03/2008. As such the driver has less features than the v15.12.x branch released 12/09/2008 (v15.12.1.1608). I guess 24p support is one of the missing features in v15.11.x.

There's also an update to the XP drivers:
    v14.36.5.5016 XP 32-Bit released 12/29/2008.
However this is also older as the current v14.37.x branch, which brings some additional features mainly to the Intel 4 Chipset Family.

    --

BTW: I tried Crysis once on X3100. Just for curiosity. 1-3 fps depending on the complexity of the scene.

Yes, just double click it. It will decompress the driver and launch setup. It will update your drivers since the GM965 PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_2A02 is contained in the .inf file.

However there's no changelog included. I expect this driver to contain some bugfix, but since I'm quite happy with the v15.12.1 driver I'll stick to this one.

I am not trying to say you can run every game on x3100 at avg 30 fps but i am saying that it is possible to run every latest games,....

BTW,.. I got to bios for my laptop but it doesn't offer any brightness controls,.. I tried running it on xp, vista but the only thing that makes my brightness button work is on windows MC (the orginally shipped windows cd for sony vaio)

    anyone got any ideas?,...

I know my BIOS has brightness options (Vostro 1400, BIOS Rev A09), but I'm not going to bother. Technically, this is a problem with the drivers. I shouldn't have to tinker with my system's BIOS to compensate for it.

I would imagine a new Intel driver release should be out within the next couple weeks anyhow, so I'm just going to wait.

L4D in win7 using Vista drivers works about the same than in Vista (it is a bit more smooth, but still barely playable using the registry tweak mentioned early in this forum, and with the annoying fog bug). When using win7 drivers, is not possible to enable software shaders and is unplayable, but it works better than under Vista without enabling software shaders.

Do you mean software vs. hardware T&L?

    That would be: -swtnl

There's also forcing OpenGL mode: -opengl

There might be similar commands for certain shader effects, or to force certain levels of DX.

EDIT: I know the commands listed above work for Warcraft III. Not sure if they do with other games (I assumed they were OS commands and not game-specific).

I've just tried TES4: Oblivion on Win 7, the game is unplayable due to all the thing become gray except the health bar, and crosshair. I know the game is still running because I hear the voice but nothing appear out of the gray.

I've just using the WDDM 1.1 driver. Tonite I will download and try the Vista drivers and mess some more with this new OS (took me whole day to download with this college's network)
Updated: Just tried the vista driver (which show to be the older version than the WDDM), Oblivion's still gray.

Trying to update the graphics drivers for my sony vaio vgn-FZ150E, which has a GM965 integrated chip according to GPU-Z. From what I've read, this is the X3100 chip, so supports Hw TnL, but if I try to install the latest driver from the Intel site it tells me driver is not validated for this computer, see your manufacturer's site.

The sony site has no new drivers that I can find. Is there any way to update the driver to support Hw TnL?

If you want to install the drivers from the Intel website, you have to uninstall the Sony ones first.

The screen resolution will go to 800x600 or 640x480 without the proper drivers installed.

You will still be able to see your desktop and install the newer drivers.
