Does the 256MB NVIDIA GeForce 9200M GS create significantly more heat than the Intel X4500? And what about with power usage? I do want a good battery life since the laptop will be used for college.

I am not sure whether to stick with the Intel X4500 or the NVIDIA 9200M GS for my laptop. I won't be playing games on the laptop so my first choice was to go with the Intel X4500, but then I will be watching movies and running Photoshop (as a hobby) and so I was then suggested to get the 9200M GS. I don't mind paying the extra bucks for the dedicated graphics card but is it worth doing it? I don't want a heat producing machine that will give me only 1hr of battery life.
And will I have problems surfing the web, watching movies and running Windows Vista with just the x4500? Need some suggestions here. Thanks

The X4500 would be just fine for the tasks you want to do. I don't think you would see a large difference with the Nvidia graphics, if any.

why don't you go with hybrid sli, the sony vaio z comes with both the intel x4500 and nvidia 9300m gs which you can switch back and forth for better power consumption and heat reduction. Switch the 9300m gs when you are watching movies or doing photoshop and just switch to the intel x4500 when your watching movies

Thats not hybrid SLI, thats just hybrid graphics.

Hybrid SLI is when the integrated graphics give a boost to the dedicated graphics when on AC power, too bad its not in the Vaio Z series.

What about when it comes to watching DVDs or general video playback?
I occasionally do illustrations on Photoshop for fun, does GPU come into play here too?

since my first laptop, my rule of the thumb is get at least a low end dedicated gpu :D you'll not know when you need the extra power

Modern GPUs can take some of the work of video decoding from the CPU and do it itself. The X4500HD and 9200M GS are both capable of improving DVD, Blu-Ray, and HD-DVD playback. (the regular X4500 can only improve DVD).
MPEG-4/AVC codecs can also offload work to the GPU, if they're coded for it.

You have the X4500MHD, that's the only one available for notebooks. The X4500HD is the desktop version, and is found in motherboards with the G45 chipset. The regular X4500 comes with the G43 desktop chipset.
