I didn't see a thread dedicated to the upcoming Ion 2 graphics, and I was looking for some information regarding it, so I thought I'd start one.
To give a brief overview of what I'm on about for those of you who don't know, there's a new discrete GPU upcoming shortly that's going to be going in netbooks (and non-netbooks, but really netbooks seem to be the focus).
Here's a good link to check out. It will have two different versions, the weaker of which is supposedly going to fit into 10.1" netbooks, something the current Ion can't do (as far as I know). In addition the Optimus switching technology should extend the battery life by switching automatically from the discrete to the integrated graphics depending upon what you're doing. (If you want to read a good article on switchable graphics, try this one)
Acer, Asus, and Lenovo are supposed to be releasing netbooks with this stuff in it at the end of May or possibly in June/July at the lastest.
So those are the basics that most of you probably already knew.
So now we get to what I was hoping to find out. Why isn't there more info out there on what's going to be upcoming if these are supposed to be released in <1 month? What's going to be coming out and when?
I'm in the market for a 10" netbook. I'm going to need to be doing a lot of writing in the next year and having something portable will be lovely. However I haven't been impressed with any of the current 10" netbooks because honestly writing and surfing the internet is about all you can do -- I'd like something that can provide entertainment as well. Movies, games, etc. It doesn't need to do it well, but having the option is nice. Ion2 seems the way to go, even if the version that will be in 10" netbooks is weaker.
The only model I've seen any details for is the upgraded eeePC -- it'll be 12" and have the Ion2 in it, but I think I read that it will be lacking the Optimus technology.
Anyone know what other models will be coming out and when? Focus on 10" for my own interests, though I guess others might be in the market for a 11-12" netbook.
I don't want to wait around past July to get something so if nothing is going to be available I'll just buy cheap now so I can get one. I'm just frustrated at the lack of announcements from companies about what they'll be offering with Ion2 other than their statements that they'll have something at some point.
I'm going to pick up a used Asus N10 model with switchable graphics soon if this isn't going to be available. It's the only 10" I know of that has switchable graphics (for under $500 anyway). Seems like it'd be a popular seller unless it had major issues I don't know about, guess I should go read up on it. That assumes I can find one to begin with... *sigh*
