I was looking at an HP to consider for my first laptop, only its go 7400 only lets u get an option of it with 128mb of video ram and doesn't give you the option for 256mb of video ram? Would it be better to have 256 or is 128 pretty sufficient for most games on a laptop... I would think 128 would consume less power...

if you are going to get a 256mb video card over a 128mb video card..go for it..you wont regret it..HOWEVER..do not expect a 256mb (128 dedicated + 128mb hypermemory) to but much better, IF better at all.

in my Asus Z70VA i have an x700 which can run BF2 at pretty decent settings while still getting around 30fps.

    hope this helps,

Yeah I have a 256 in my desktop, just with laptops I'm not sure if it would be better to have 128 for less battery consumption.

i thought i would need 3+ hours of battery life, since im a student..always taking it to class, etc... in every class i am plugged in, in the library im plugged in, ad-hoc-ing call of duty DM games with some friends...battery life to me is a very small part of buying a laptop..just so happens for me that under my normal usage (not playing games, internet/email/bittorrent/winamp) i get around 3 hours..maybe alittle more, and couldnt be happier.

    hope this helps.

Most laptops right now only come with 128mb. Normally the 17in screen laptops have the 256mb cards. Maybe in the future they will change this. It is proably a heating issue right now too.

256 will use up more battery, and cards like the 7400 cant use 256mb, they just dont have enough power to use all that ram so even though its their it wont be utilized.

I would go for 256mb dedicated minimum. It won't take up much battery life if ur not actually playing games or playing older games.

Yes go for 256. Especially if you cannot upgrade (no MXM or AXIOM).

    Cheers,

If you can go for 256MB, then that's great, do so. But, as matt said, mid-range cards such as the Go7400 just do not have enough power to effectively use all 256MB of memory (if it had 256MB dedicated) - it probably can't even use all 128MB dedicated, considering it only has a 64-bit memory bus.
