I just ordered the new Macbook Pro and I found out it has a Geforce 8600GT 128MB.
While the 8600GT is supposed to be a good card, I'm kinda concerned about the 128MB. Does it really make a difference if I go from 128 mb to 256 mb?
Would a GS version of the gpu that has 256 mb be better than the GT with only 128 mb?

If you are going to run OS X, you probably are not going to need the extra 128MB as a Mac user, you probably don't game heavy, right?
If you are going to game, you may want 256MB. Some people want as much as 512MB of VRAM, which is supposed to come on the Compal IFL90 and the desktop replacement Asus C90S (both 8600M GT). -
well I'm gonna run both Mac OSX and windows vista on this.
The only game I'm really want is Starcraft 2 and maybe UT 3. But I hear that they are making a mac version of Starcraft 2, so hopefully they'll take into account the new macs which only have 128 mb so if the pc version is too high maybe the mac version will be more realistic. -
I think Blizzard will make the game compatible with a lot of hardware, since they will want to sell a lot of copies of their new flagship-ish title. I am not sure about UT 3 though.

Lets say a game requires a 256 mb card.
there are weaker gpus than a Geforce 8600 GT that have more RAM. So if a game can run on those ones, couldn't they run on mine?
I remembered someone saying it was the features that a card supports that is more important for running games than the amount of video memory it has. -
I personally would get the 128MB 8600GT graphics card and not the 256MB 8600GS. The 8600GS and the 8600GT compare to the Go7600 and Go7700. The 8600GS is slightly better than the Go7600. However the 8600GT is better than both. I wouldn't worry too much about the ram.

Ok I'll stick with the 128 mb version. I was reading other forums and they were talking about how the 8600 GT shares up to 512 mb with the system memory.
So hopefully if a game requires more video ram the gpu can share with the system ram to compensate, even though it'll probably be slower.
I'm just worried that someone might program a game that will detect how much vram I have and will refuse to install if I don't have 256 mb on the video card before sharing ram rather than taking a chance and running it anyway. -
hey, a 128MB go6600 is better than a 512MB go7400.....
id take the GT over the GS anyday
Is 128mb video memory good enough?
