I called up the dell rep and explained to him that i was told the XPS M1330 has the exact same RAM type in the graphics card as Vostro 1400 yet on the site it says the 8400 GS in the M1330 has GDDR3 and and the Vostro 1400's 8400 GS has DDR2. I wrote an email to Dell complaining that i got an inferior graphics card in my Vostro 1400 than the M1330 even though i was told they are the same and then Dell phoned me up.

They said that the 8400 GS DDR2 version (Vostro 1400) is better than the 8400 GS GDDR3 version (M1330). Is this true?

probably not. you would have to know the clocks to verify. i doubt it though. 95% they are lying bast@*%$.

GDDR3 > GDDR2 by a far margin, and the 8400 GS would have to be pretty poorly designed for the DDR2 version to be better.

As long as it's the same amount of GDDR3 RAM as DDR2 RAM, the GDDR3 will win.

And depending on the graphics options you turn on in games, half as much GDDR3 memory can still beat out DDR2 memory.

Dell might be lying to you. Might need someone who owns a 1330 to confirm the clock speeds just so you have straight facts.

all that matters is the clock speed. its possible that they are the same, which would mean the cards are equivalent. its not likely but its certainly possible...

gddr3 is not inherently better than ddr2.

Even if the clock speeds are the same, you can get much more out of overclocking with the GDDR3 version.

Wow thx guys. so basically instead of DDR2 being better than GDDR3 its GDDR 3 thats better than DDR2?

Also if someone with a M1330 can confirm the clocks as i already know the DRR2 (vostro 1400) clocks.

Manzi, I don't want to encourage double posting...but try looking in Dell forums to see if anyone has them posted there already.

From the Vostro overlcoking thread in the Dell section i've found out that the stock clocks for the Vostro 1400's DDR2 version of the 8400 GS is:

    core- 400
    memory-499

So hopefully the GDDR3 version of the 8400 GS is a little higher to get my compensation.

yeah the standard nvidia clock is 600mhz for the memory. so you might be able to swing that. (although i dont know what the m1330 clocks are)

Fact of the matter is Dell lied to you about that one. They said what they wanted to say (and you wanted to hear) to get you off the phone.

Im confused, is that 600mhz memory for the DDR2 (vostro 1400) version?

The stock clocks were 400/600. The 1400/1420 both use a 8400GS with DDR3, same as the XPS M1330. Basically, if you can clock the memory higher than 600 MHz, be sure it's DDR3 . Dell's just playing it safe by putting up DDR2, after the 8600GT fiasco.

Ya, I found out shortly after ordering my laptop that the 8600M GT inside it was not the GDDR3 version as both the Dell website and Rivatuner implied. Big dissapointment there, but it's not enough of a difference to warrant cancelling my order and spending hundreds more on a different laptop.

Ok sorry for this but now im highly confused. Are the clocks for the DDR2 8400 GS and the GDDR3 8400 GS different?

AFAIK, there is no DDR2 8400M GS. If there were, then the clocks would indeed be different. DDR3 runs cooler, so can be clocked higher.

Lol just for the sake of my getting compensation, and for them wrongly stating that it uses DDR2, lets just say it has DDR2.

So for the final time is the 8400 GS GDDR3 (XPS M1330) better then the 8400 GS DDR2 (vostro 1400) and if so is it becuase of higher "clocks" or because it produces less heat?

    theoretical concept only:

i dont know any facts about the m1330

if the m1330 has gddr3 ram and your vostro has ddr2 ram, they have not necessarily lied to you by telling you that the cards are equal. the potential to overclock gddr3 is not a good argument for compensation, because that usually voids warranty and is not supported at all.

it is possible that if you have ddr2 ram and the m1330 has gddr3 ram that they would have clocked them differently - (the m1330 would be higher).

its not necessarily true. you would need to find out the clocks on the m1330.

Ok ill find out the stock clocks for both the DDR2 (vostro) and GDDR3 (XPS) versions and just compare the numbers. The one with the highest number is better. Am i correct?
