If I buy a boxed copy or a digital download from Amazon.com can I give the key code to someone as a gift and they can activate it on Steam?
Thanks.

I'm pretty sure you can.
Deus Ex is on STEAM Retail Key list: https://support.steampowered.com/kb_article.php?ref=7480-wusf-3601
And I remember when it first launched, many NBR users bought the download version from Amazon and activated via STEAM; I'm sure it also works via retail boxed version.
Here's an article that says SQUARE announced PC version will be a steamworks title: Steamworks confirmed for Deus Ex: Human Revol - Shacknews.com - Video Game News, Trailers, Game Videos, and Files
What's cool about Amazon is that when you buy a game, you get the KEY instantly. I just bought and activated Just Cause 2 a few days ago.
Good luck -
MagusDraco Biiiiiiirrrrdmaaaaaaan
the digital download is 100% steamworks (I bought it from them when it was on sale for $40 and they game a steam key..and an installer if you wanted to use that to install it to steam instead of downloading it off of steam)

Star Forge Quaggan's Creed Redux!
Yeah Deus Ex is like Skyrim: Steamworks only.

According to Steam:
Which retail CD Keys are accepted on Steam?
All retail Valve games and a number of third-party games can be registered to your Steam account. All of the following games can be registered through Steam:
Deus Ex: Human Revolution Keys in this format: 1AB2C-D3FGH-456I7 -
Problem is how do I know that the key is in that format if I am ordering online?

Why don't you buy it as a gift in steam?
You have both options at checkout , buy it for yourself or as gift -

I downloaded borderlands from amazon, and it became fully integrated to steam after activation( ie automatic patches etc) now i deleted it but stays in my library if I want to download it later again

I bought my copy of Deus EX HR from Amazon downloads, activated on Steam with the serial. Got an useless tactical options pack, or whatever it was.
Is Deus Ex Human Revolution exclusively Steamworks?
