Just a quick question....I just got DoW but havent played it yet, i was looking for a really tactical rts. Do you think you DoW is pretty tactical online?
-
No its more of a fast paced action oriented RTS. With that said, all RTS games have elements of tactical game play, but some have more then others. If you are looking for a tactical RTS I would look at Universe at War, or Supreme Commander.
Personally I love the Dawn of War series, so much in-fact after playing it for the first time I started reading books that take place in the 40K universe. -
Dawn of War? It's both tactical and brute force. DoW requires more superiority over firepower than anything, and a good deal of planning by knowing unit weaknesses. Sort of a rock/paper/scissors to some degree.

I have to say that Company of Heroes may be more of what you're looking for if it's tactics and strategy that you're looking for.
They're both by the same great strategy game developer, Relic Entertainment. -
The Forerunner Notebook Virtuoso
COmpany of heroes for sure. Universe at war is pretty fun so far.

It's an RTS, yes, it can be both brute force or tactical, however you want to play it.
Being an RTS, you can do things like what I do when I play DoW , send in a moderate sized squad to one of thier small bases making them stock up troops there, while you rape their main base with a massive army.
Juuuuuust like most RTS's -
is there a way or certain place to play with people that make it more tactical......?

rock paper scisors style, ive got all 3 games, dark crusade wont work on my vista =(, say your marines ran into a horde of orcs, they are toast until you bring a mech over to wipe the floor with them, then artillery blows up your mech, then ur troops move in to destroy the artillery, something like that ^^
gets frantic in multiplayer coz you can set the win conditions,
control an area is fun, -
I'd say it's more tactical than most RTS'es. (Supreme Commander isn't very tactical imo. Strategic, perhaps)
Being good at DoW requires a lot of tactics. That is, it requires you to plan, react to your opponent's tactics, and adapt your own. It requires you to use the terrain to your advantage, and pick the right place (and time) to attack. And an element of micromanagement. (Keeping your units at the right distance from the enemy, or charging into melee with your opponents' ranged units)
But of course it's possible to play just by brute force. Spam the same couple of unit types, and rush your enemy. You'll even win a few matches over inexperienced players, but getting good at it requires tactics. That's what makes it fun. -
DoW can be more tactical if you chosse a less obvious race to play than Space marines (firepower) or Orks(close combat).
To play with Eldar, Tau or Necrons requires a good tactical planning.
Althoug I'm a Space Marine player, both at the computer game and the board miniatures game
Is DoW tactical?
