I am deciding whether or not to get it in SLI or single.

I am anticipating playing games like Modern Warfare 2, Crysis, Battlefield 1943, and the upcoming MMO Star Trek Online.

Will the performance upgrade with 280M SLI make much difference, a noticeable difference worth the extra $750?

you can get a single at first, then get a second one later on if you feel that you want more performance.

a single GTX 280M should be able to play everything at high settings at high resolutions.

dual GTX 280M's (in SLI) will be for bragging rights. ;)

$750 was the price for adding a 2nd card of 9800M GTX.
Adding a 2nd card of GTX 280M only cost you $490.

Note: Based on RJ Tech pricing.

The GTX 280M on RJTech's website is the MXM 2.1 version with the M570TU heatsink and hardware. We do not know yet how much the MXM 3.0b card will cost to put in the M98NU sameet is looking at.

I know. But I don't think the price will be much different though.
The reason is because RJ Tech pricing for :
    D901C barebone with 1x 9800M GTX = $2039 ($1959+$80)
    D901F barebone with 1x 280M GTX = $1759

    Note:
*D901C barebone with WUXGA LCD cost extra $80.
*D901C barebone with 1x 9800M GTX no longer available for sale.

The 280M is a poweful card on its own. Sure its got limits, but you've gotta get your priorities straight.
