At the risk obe being reduntant, I'm going to ask this question:
Is the Half-Life 2 series ABOSLUTELY ubiquitous for a lover of PC FPS's? I loved Bioshock, for example, and did enjoy the demo of HL@ ("Ravenholm") was the name.
I ask this question because I am trying to decide whether or not to purchase the Orange Box or to go for Assasin's Creed (the more about that I hear, by the way, the less I want to get it), or Call of Duty 4.
I'm currently leaning heavily towards the Orange Box; should I hold off for the likes of Mass Effect, or go for it? (strapped for cash, @ the moment).

Buy Orange Box and COD4 if possible...
Orange Box has GREAT value! Sure the COD4 campaign is great, but the really value comes out if you do a lot of multiplayer gaming, where COD4 pwns!
Not that Counter-Strike:Source from Orange Box is any bad either (but still not AS good)
And yes, HL2 is great fun if you get into the storyline
(which I'm sure you will since you enjoyed Bioshock!)
-
I agree with both of those purchases, Orange Box and COD4 are both great. I've been enjoying Assassin's creed as well, but I'd recommend the 1st two over it for sure.
ALSO: the Orange Box DOESN'T include Counter-Strike: Source, but it comes with Team Fortress 2, which is batter anyways. -
Seriously ?? Didn't know that...
-
since u want just one i suggest u wait for Mass Effect and get...i played it on the 360 and its very nice
-
Doesn't mean the PC port would be good, now does it ?
I don't think there's any point in waiting...
At the most you can get COD4.... Tis' the undisputed king
-
I would say Orange Box is definitely the best choice, probably followed by Mass Effect (haven't played Assassin's Creed though). Half-Life 2 is possibly the greatest game of all time in my eyes, and the episodes + TF2 are fantastic as well. And Portal is pretty neat too.
IMO TF2 (comes with the Orange Box), and CS: Source for that matter, are far superior to Call of Duty 4. But then again CoD4 isn't a bad game either.. I just find that it doesn't really do anything new and the gameplay is average at best. Well, at least that's my take on it. -
I agree with the guys up there. You really cant go wrong with HL2, and definitely not with the orange box

CoD4 >< OB > Mass Effect >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> A. Creed
I bought Creed yesterday and I'm ALREADY bored with it.
You can't go wrong with Duty or the Box -- you will thoroughly enjoy both games. -
Creed gets super repetitive.... OB is 5 games. OB FTW. Portal is the shortest game but my favorite of the OB.
-
I got bored of Assassin's Creed in just the 2nd level!! It's SOOO damn repetitive and freakin' boring!! It CANNOT compare with OB or COD4 !!
-
The Orange Box is the best deal atm, 5 games for the price of 1 (3 linked to an awesome Half Life story , 1 awesome multiplayer and a puzzle like single player)
-
TF2 is really that good, huh ? Gotta try it then
-
Definately Orange Box first. Just TF2 + Portal is worth the $50 already.
-
yea, dude, TF2 is awesome.
But give AC a chance, it has a beatiful story. You learn that as you perform more assassinations.
That`s what I expect in a game, awesome story.
Not to mention awesome graphics -
Alright. I'll give AC some more gameplay time
And TF2 is the next thing I'm gonna try out!
-
I do hope you have Unreal Tournament 3
After Half Life, UT series are pretty much my second favourite... -
Hmmm... there's nothing really I wouldn't have
Among current games, this is on my laptop....
Assassin's Creed
BioShock
Call Of Duty 4
Crysis
Gears Of War
Medal of Honor : Airborne
MotoGP 2007
Need for Speed : ProStreet
Soldier of Fortune : Payback
The Witcher
Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six Vegas 2
Unreal Tournament 3
World in Conflict
Command and Conquer 3
And some more...
Anything I'm missing, Eleron ? -
Well,Timeshift is too boring, but it`s a cool feature with time stopping, slowing and rewindind.
Nah,that list looks ok for now
I play a lot of action adventure,so the Prince of Persia series (1 2 and 3) are awesome...and they have awesome videos -
Hmmm... already done with Timeshift
And almost finished most of the games in that list

Aw, be nice to Timeshift.
And then as far as the whole CoD4 vs. OB "debate," I'd go with the Orange Box because frankly, you just get more for your money from the Orange Box.
If you buy CoD4 you get one good game.
If you buy the Orange Box, you get five. -
Oh, and I agree with it being something you really should buy - Half-Life games are like Nine Inch Nails albums - they haven't come along very often, but they have been handcrafted to perfection, and they are thankfully being released slightly more often as of recent years. -
NIN are awesome, I wouldn`t have paired them with Half Life.
Nice touch! -
All these HL threads have got me wanting to play HL: Source and OpFor again.
-
Did you really need to use the word 'ubiquitous?'
-
Scary word, huh ?
-
referring to the cod4 vs. HL2: OB debate....
i'd go with hl2.
i have OB on my notebook and its prettyyyyyyyy sweet. hl2 has an interesting storyline, portal is a fun puzzle solving game, team fortress 2 is fun as hell, AND THEN!... you still have hl2 episode 1 and 2 to play!
so yeah. go with HL2: OB.
i've already played cod4 to death on xbox... it CAN get old.. -
The OB is a great deal. It's definately worth every penny and then some.
There's just far too much in it to explain it all. But it's got everything, a GREAT multiplayer experience, a GREAT story experience, and something different thrown in that does a very good job at being fun.
COD4's single player is short, it won't last very long, and online is extremely fun til the point where you've been level 55 for months and have done everything there is to do, and then there's custom maps & mods for the multiplayer
I just got assassin's creed 3 days ago, and I'm still playing it. I've had alot of fun with this game so far, not a single time do I ever think it feels too repetitive, just new, and unique. I've never played a game where your a free running assassin before, and it's quite fun. I've been playing for probebly around 10 hours so far, doing side quests and such, and I'm up to the part where I have to assassinate a guy on his private boat. -
I got threw up when I watched my friend play HL2 (yes only WATCH, not even PLAY)
off topic: my new laptop is arriving tomorrow.and I have 4 new games waiting next to me already! crysis, cod 4, Assassin's Creed and medieval 2: total war. plus some previous purchases that i couldn't really enjoy due to graphic problem, including flight sim X, colin dirt (with logitech G25) and test drive unlimited. which one should I try first?! this is even harder than my final exam!!!
-
Portal is the ****
that game kept me so entertained its not even funny
HL2 is also alot of fun but as i was at a friends house portal grabbed my attention more so i didnt play much of HL2 portal wont have much replay value but wow i love teh concept!
