An important part of why bought my z81sp is that it has an MXM graphics card.

My problem is that I don't know of anyone that sells them, (except for one site that has a 6600, but i have a 6800) and it doesn't seem that any new notebooks are being released with newer MXM cards.

MXM was really more of a abortion of an idea. Each laptop manufacturer has different space requirements for their video cards and that space changes between older and newer laptops therefore they would have to design newer video cards to fit older motherboards which is not cost effective. So MXM/Axiom(AIT's version) will never really go anywhere till all laptop manufacturers decide on a uniform size and placement of video cards and I don't ever see that happening.

    it goes on

because i believe there were even consumer lawsuits about it you wont see it as an advertised feature much in the us.

in europe it is still advertised frequently.

its features are not nearly as advertised.

I do believe that what dell uses is actually mxm, just dell mxm. the card upgradeable concept will go on. the graphics cards you can buy in compusa and upgrade I dont think is happening.

Yeah, MXM never really took off, and I can't say I expected it to for the reasons people have just given above. It's a shame, I remember about a year ago seeing people say they didn't want to get such and such computer because they believed MXM was gonna allow them to upgrade their laptop to any new GPU that comes out, and refused to listen when others on this site told them otherwise. I wonder how they are liking their "upgradable" computer now :/

HEY! i have an MXM computer and i feel 'safe'. because if the graphics chip blows up or something, they wont have to replace the entire motherboard (or not???)

The real reason for the creation of MXM was for the notebook manufacturers, not consumers. It is much easier for a manufacturer to upgrade a graphics card in a notebook if they can swap it out. Most of the time, the video card is soldered to the motherboard, making a video card upgrade and expensive for the manufacturers.

Yeah, but you won't have to with ANY PCI-E GPU either. So there is no reason to pay extra for MXM over PCI-E.

One thing I really like about Dell, they tend to upgrade their cards more than any other manufacturer. I know I was thrilled when I got to upgrade my Gen 2 to the 7800GTX, and I am hoping for a shot at upraging my m1710 someday

What? PCI-E is just a bus...that's it, not a slot for notebooks. You can have a PCI-E card that's soldered onto the motherboard. MXM and Axiom are socket standards. Not full standards(due to dimensional and heat dissipation issues), but standards nonetheless.

I don't know what other "socket" any other PCI-Express GPU's are using? What else is out there?

anyone know if it's true that there's a 7800go mxm type III???

If they make one then their has got to be some way to obtain one, if not from a reseller, then maybe on ebay in a few years.

I want to upgrade the 6800 in my z81 someday, but get the feeling that I prolly won't be able to. :(

    Hi there,

MXM is not dead. Just check the table on my site. Many new notebooks coming with MXM, from MSI, Quanta, Unwill,...

And yes, 7800's are for sale. I have a small batch. To be perfectly honest, I ran into some compatibility problems. If you want to give that Z81 a try, drop me a line. I'm sure we can work something out.

In practice, for non-proven or interesting upgrades, I offer a 100% money back guarantee if it doesn't work (as is/was the case with some Uniwill models for some reason).
