I was just on Steam about a hour ago and when I tried to log back onto steam I get the "cannot contact steam, please try again later" this has never happened before and I don't see anything about it being down anywhere else.

I thought it was still up! Yes I did, and I've restarted a couple of times too.

Do you have a firewall? Maybe something(like firewall) is blocking Steam from accessing the Internet.

I guess I'm better off reinstalling Steam, does anyone know how I can backup my saves?

Good luck getting support from Steam.

I have a support ticket question that has not been answered in 5 days.

I tried to add my UT3 retail version to my steam account and now I am locked out of my account.

This can happen when Steam is trying to update(it seems). Try this:
If it doesn't work or you aren't willing to try it some people report that you just have to wait.

STill unable to add UT3 retail version to my games but after 6 days I'm back into my steam account.

UT3 is very buggy and I hope that STEAM can work out the bugs and make additional patches to keep it running. It's an awesome game if it works.
