Hi all, I've been looking around and planning to buy a really good gaming machine and I had my sights on the Sager NP 8130 and 8150, just to have that great hardware but I'm now thinking (I have $1300 and i also want to buy a new smartphone) that maybe if i downgrade my choice in gaming machine to something a little cheaper i'll get pretty much the same experience.
I've seen that after stepping down from a GTX 560 or a GTX 460 nowadays (on xoticpc.com) that the next GPUs are the GT 500 series with the GT 555 being the best, so i was just wondering if that'd be enough for games like CoD Black Ops and MW3, maybe some Fallout 3 and Borderlands and Battlefield 3.
I just really want a machine that I won't really have to worry about heat as much as I did with my MSI GX630 (hence my choice of the NP 8130 due to the dual fans). Any help? Please.

There's a bigger difference than you might think between a 555 and a 560. The 555 should be enough, but don't expect to run games at ultra detail with max resolution.
-
I have a 540 and I run all of those games fluently. MW2 @ 60FPS, BO @ 50FPS, Oblivion @60FPS, and BF:BC2@55FPS
The 555 should have plenty power to handle those games. BF3 I'm not so sure of. The beta will be out soon so we'll see how well it handles. But yeah, don't worry. The 555m will handle games just fine. -
Karamazovmm Overthinking? Always!
You can run those games with that kind of fps due to the low resolution that you have and because the details are on medium high. -
my 555m runs Crysis 2 at 1600x900 on maximum settings, DiRT 3 at native resolution on almost all max settings, and haven't tested other new games.
-
NO GPU IS EVER ENOUGH LOL
-

-
Running =/= Fluidly playing.
You can always scale it back. I used very high with 1600x900 to reach 40ish fps on average. -

I have the 555 in my XPS 17 and it stinks. I would advise against it if you play a lot of games.
It is a little faster than the 6750m in my experience.
But for the size and cost of the XPS a G74 would have been a much better choice - or a Clevo with 6970m.
I'll be sticking mine in the market soon. -
Plus that 555m is soldered to the mobo, so upgrading the gpu is impossible -
so essentially since I want to be able to play games at medium to high settings, the GT 555 wouldn't be for me then?
-
555 would be fine for medium/high graphics, it's pretty great card.
I'm guessing you're looking at Sager NP5165 which is $930 with win7
How about an Asus g53 for $100 more, it's got the gtx460 and here you are stepping into high end cards.

Its a okay gpu.
It will be good at a mix of medium and some high like textures.
So i would go for it man -
Quick look at our classifieds and this one is prefect, try to workout some good price

The 555m in the M14x is a 192-bit card, the others are 128-bit which greatly gimps performance, plus others are clocked lower than the M14x one too. So the M14x 555m is a bit of an odd duck, at least on the good side, but any other 555m is not going to be great for gaming at more than 720p if you want any amount of decent detail.
-
i don't like the g53 because of its body. it doesn't allow for ease of access to its interior.

IMO, you will end up wishing you had more power and may suffer buyers remorse. Save up a couple more weeks to get something with a GTX 560m or better. Don't listen to people who say you will be able to "run" every game at max settings. Unless 15-20fps is playable for you.
-
Lol... 'max' settings are overrated in a lot of cases.
For example in Crysis 2, anything above 'High' is not exactly worth it because the visual changes are so minor you never notice them (at extremely large performance impact).
Other games (but not all) are quite similar in this regard.
So a 555m I would say is a very decent contemporary mid-range gpu which will likely allow you to play latest games at 720p with mostly maxed out settings.
But anything above 720p will likely force you to lower the details (although it's hardly set in stone).
My 9600m GT is still good to this day for majority of games I play at mostly maxed out settings (and that card is almost 3 years old now).
So it depends on the choice of games, resolution, details, etc.
But I digress that if you want to enjoy most games at higher resolution than 720p, then I would play it safe and save up for the 560M. -
Let's be completely realistic here. The 555M is only as fast as a desktop 8800 GT, a card which will be 4 years old next month.
Don't let the modern numbering fool you into thinking that it's on par with modern technology. -

The nvidia 555 in the m14x plays games pretty well. I haven't had any issues with BC2 or newer games like rift or dead island.
-
Damn I LOVE my GT555m.
I play pretty much all my games in max settings, VSYNC OFF though.
I get anywhere between 35-60 FPS in MOST games (Mafia II, New Vegas, Black Ops)
Street Fighter IV however I have to have VSYNC ON, because it would be something absurd like 140fps.
EDIT: My MAX is 1600x900, I don't have the FHD monitor, the display between the two just wasn't worth the money for me on my XPS 17 L702x -
As I am a 720p player (res of my 32" TV) I am more than satisfied with my 555m. Fallout New Vegas, Modern Warfare 2, Shogun Total War 2, Crysis, Dead Space 2, Space Marine, World of Tanks, it can deal with everything maxed or high with lots of eye candy. Really happy with it. I think it is the best Nvidia solution for budget gamers now, with the 560m in the sweet spot cost/benefit.
Is a nVidia GT 555 enough?
