    The 256mb go7400

i am looking at a config with the dv6000t...i wanna play games like graw, halo, halo2 (when it shall come)..stuff like that.

Will it even run things like HL2??

How well would it work for Vista?

Benchmarks are so hard to find for this thing and the only thing i know about bnchmarks is the higher, the better.

I know the card shares (I believe).....so how much is really dedicated??

Remember, Halo 2 will only work in Vista (or so MS has been saying for over a year). I believe it'll be the first DX10 game, and it will require DX 10, and will not work with DX 9 (thus needing Vista). At least, thats about the only reason i could come up with behind it "requiring" Vista.
I thought the 7400 was dedicated with 256 mb of ram...
If not, I imagine it won't play graw or halo2 very well (not sure about it though). I imagine it should be able to play hl2.
There should be plenty of benchmarks out there for those games with that card.
Check the HP forum and see what they say.

    1) vista doesn't require dx10 so bungie has said.....will require vista though...
This is what i have gathered....no big deal...i will be eating up halo 3 when the time comes

    2) ummm the 256 is turbocached btw...i believe divided 128 128...

of course....i am not totally sure about anything computer wise....just is the 7400 as bad as people say...and what exactly is wrong with borrowing RAM from the system....if u have like 2 gigs, what's the big deal?

No, I meant that DX10 will require vista.
using system ram is a LOT slower than having onboard ram.
Again, I'm not sure how good the card is, as I'm not that familiar with comparing laptop vid cards as I'd rather use a desktop for gaming.

correct vista can run with dx9, at least for now. It wouldn't make sense for them to force dx10 as so FEW cards support dx10.

Ok since nobody has answered the origional question yet, I will. The 7400 really isnt that bad. I can play HL2/EP1 at 1288x800, with everything at high, and with HDR and still get 35-40 FPS. I played BF2 at the same resolution, with it almost at full specs. BF2142 is medium settings. Oblivion is low-medium settings at 1280x800, will playable frames. As for the whole turbocache thing. The card has 64mb of dedicated VRAM on it, and it takes the other 192mb from your system RAM. This really isnt that big of a deal if you have 2GB or so, like you said. Now as for it being horrible, thats not true. Turbocache isnt as good as actually having 256mb of dedicated VRAM on the card, but benchmarks show that its not much worse, since nvidia's turbocache is really a hardware thing. Now on the other hand ATI's Hypermemory does the same thing, but does it with more software, and is actually pretty bad. Turbocache is the best thing there is for borrowing memory.

To foosa123. The reason they are putting H2 on the PC with Vista, years after its been out for the Xbox, is to help show what Vista can do. The game will look better on a Vista PC with good enough hardware then it did on the Xbox. Its also just natural in the evolution of games. You need to take small steps to get to new places. So they are using a very sucessful title, on a well finished and tuned engine, to give a starting point to make games for Vista. Now about H3 by x-mas, not going to happen bud. I would say mid 2007 at the earliest, there is 0 chance it will see the light of day before this year is out. I mean they just did their first Alpha multiplayer/matchmaking test 2 days ago. Yeah it was a total sucess with almost no problems, but the game is still a long way from being finished.

    so its 64mb dedicated???
crap. i heard somewhere it was 128 dedicated. O well. I'd rather be getting an e1705 with a 7900gs, but that aint gonna happen. I was lookin at the dv6000t because it seems to have a simple midrange card in a semi-lightweight, non enormous system (tho i hear battery SUCKS).

the dv9000t has a 7600...is that a huge gap in performance???

and let's say i wanted to play...oo.....let's say FEAR. On medium settings, 800x600 res with a 7400. What kinda framerate can i expect....any *educated* guess would make me happy.

    Thank You

I play FEAR on my 7400. Get about 50-70fps on 800x600, options on medium generally speaking, but some on high, some on low.

Shadows are turned off, absolutely kills the framerate. This does not affect enviromental shadows though, so the game still looks good, but without detailed character shadows.

All in all, it looks decent. Outdoor sections look a bit ropey but indoor shooting looks good. Can turn up the settings, but I prefer to have a consistant high framerate, because it can dip into the 30's in a really big firefight with plaster flying everywhere

And yes, I too thought it was 128+128...

Havok, seeing that u have a 7400, u think it is a safe bet for me to get a dv600t equipped with that...it will be used mostly for schooling, but i enjoy some games here and there. I also am hoping to get vista, too btw.

It's great for the casual gamer, I use mine as a desktop replacement during LAN games which its handy for when I can't lug around my desktop. It will also be fine for Vista, and is great for older gaming titles >2005, and can still play recent titles comfortably above minimum settings.

Just to run a brief outline, I've played:

BattleField Vietnam, Far Cry, Half Life 2, Counter Strike Source, GTA San Andreas, Day of Defeat Source, Dawn of War, etc, at high settings no problems.

Battlefield 2, BF2142, FEAR Combat, Company of Heroes at medium-ish settings no problems either.

Haven't tried anything newer then that last list personally....

I tested an HP machine with a Core Duo and Go7400 GPU back in July and found that it ran most games at perfectly acceptable settings. I installed Oblivion on it, which is one of the hardest games to handle at the moment, and it ran reasonably well at 800x600 with medium - medium-high settings.
I also played Star Wars: Battlefront II on it, with a 1440x900 resolution and medium-high settings with no troubles.

Dude, My go 7200 plays most games out at med/high settings at low res. So the 7400 will tear throught pre 05 games, and will run recent games at decent settings.

I took a screenshot of FEAR combat and a few other games on my 7400...

FEAR I get between 40-70 FPS and is always smooth during heavy firefights. The visual quality can be increased but while I stiill get a smooth framerate, it can dip low in big firefights....

BF2 runs at about 35-60fps dependant on whats going on but its always smooth...

Dawn of War runs Maxed out no problems.

Company of Heroes as you can see runs on decent settings and smoothly.

Hope this helps! I have alot of games I play on my desktop like Call of Duty 2, Day of Defeat Source, HellForces, and alot of others, if you want screen captures of any of them running on my 7400 just ask. :)

LOL, 999 FPS. And fear looks the same on my lappy as well, which is in my sig, but it gets a little less fps, and it has shadows turned off. In big firefights I get good FPS.

Thats actually a strange problem I get in Company of Heroes. It displays fps as 999, both on desktop and laptop. But it shows the real FPS when its 40 or below for some reason, so as long as it stays at 999 it means a good high fps. :)

I get the full version of CoH tomorrow, I'm hoping it's better than the demo. I'll give you all an update on how it runs tomorrow night.

And Havok, could you please give me more detail on DoW's performance on your machine, I'd really love to compare once I get Dark Crusade tomorrow :D.

Running at 1024x768, everything on high and options enabled. Its not a very demanding game. :)
