Is it safe to put Coollaboratory Liquid Ultra on a graphics card chip?

I am getting kinda desperate to cool down a pair of 780m SLI on a Clevo p370sm. When I play games the temps are getting over 90C-92C and I'm not even overclocking the graphics cards.

I got the laptop with the same temperatures. I repasted, the temps dropped a few degrees, I repasted again and the same temps appear. The paste I use now is called Antec formula 7. It was the best stuff at the store when I went. I usually use AS5 but lost the tube.

When I had a m18x r2, the temps would never go over 78C with a mild 10% overclock with 7970m xfire.

I have Liquid Ultra on the processor, the temps are good but I'm afraid to put it on GPUs. Is it safe to do it or not?

If you can put it on your CPU you can put it on your GPU. Although I'd advise against using it at all, because it's 100% metal and any minor drip will result in a short on the board. I personally don't like the risk, I'll take a few deg C warmer by using IC Diamond or Gelid GC Extreme with basically no risk of bricking my mainboard.

Your GPU's should not be reaching 90C while gaming. That's incredibly hot. Something is wrong. You're either using too little paste or a very poor quality paste. And I agree with HT. IC Diamond is a good paste.

I have repasted 3 times and I get the same results. 1st time, 1 small dot in the middle, the small line, and last, I used an old credit card to spread it around. The credit card method was the best result but only got a few degree cooler.

What paste are you using? Spreading it isn't a good method. Creates bubbles. A larger "rice grain" size should do for mobile GPU's. Personally, I use the "thin line" cross-method because I found it spreads more evenly.

Also, did you upgrade those cards, or did they come with the system?

I might have to sand the heat down or some other mods.

I use Antec formula 7 atm, best stuff I can find at the store. The cards came with the laptop. I bought the laptop used after selling an m18x r2.

Do you spread it in the middle or do an X. I saw some videos on youtube on both methods but dont know which one to pick.

    Definitely try IC Diamond.

If the owner before you upgraded to the 780M's, he/she may have used the wrong heat sinks or something. There must be something wrong if they reach 90C+. Open it up, take a picture and show us.

Do what Mr. Fox has suggested, use electrical tape around the GPU die. It's what I'm planning to do with my 880M SLI.

The pipes look okay from what I can tell, but the entire cooling system seems to be inadequate for such hardware. I would try a new paste. Purchase some IC Diamond. 1.5g is enough.

This sounds like some cryogenic superconductivity lab experiment.

    To OP, Stick with ICd7.
    Good luck.

EDIT: after reading more closely at OP post I too had 90+C temps on my gpu and found that there was a lot of fluff on the radiator fins in between the fan and the radiator grill.
My advice try looking in there for any obstacle(s) restricting the cooling efficiency of your copper radiator since you did a repaste and nothing changed.
Good luck and hope this helps it did for me went back to 72C max temps on gpu.

As a P370SM3 owner with 780M SLI, I can definitely confirm that for me to even hit 82 degrees in a game, it needs to be single GPU, sitting at 99% constant AND the day needs to be quite hot. I have my laptop propped up for better cooling, but 90's while gaming is definitely something wrong.

When I use SLI, my GPUs usually sit in the low 60s to the low 70s. I rarely even hit high 70s and if I do, it's in the middle of a super hot day.

I kinda damaged that speaker cone. I didnt know what it was until I looked at the manual. I didnt put much pressure on it and it made a dent. The subwoofer speaker still works but I really miss the sound quality from the m18x r2.

I'll try to repaste again tomorrow

Don't sand the heatsink down.. Maybe you get poorer contact between chip die and heatsink.

I am sure you can get a replacement for that speaker. Good luck with paste.

you should clean the heatsink use compressed air
replace the thermal compound with new one in my ipinion ic diamond are not good i've tried few months ago and have the same performance compared to mx-4, i always used liquid ultra for both gpu's and cpu without any issue.
applyng ram thermal pads (alluminium or copper) on the heatsink http://www.ebay.com/itm/8PCS-Alumin...nks-HeatSink-For-IC-DDR-RAM-VGA-/271700655310

most important) rise up your machine, your laptop need to breath

i have 980m sli and nevere reached 90 degrees ,75 C cpu and 76 C both gpu's (in summer) , your temperatures are insane

sorry for my english i know is bad
