    'Ello everyone,

12th last month brought an asus a6va laptop with a radeon x700 inside. I do a lot of gaming on it, but recently, the screen sometimes goes reallly funny with fuzzy lines. It can happen in the space of 6 hours, or as today, as soon as I booted up, (and it doesn't stop until I restart).

Anyway, that was probably a load of toss so I've uploaded a pic below.

Cheers, been trying to give the shop a ring but they refuse to answer on the phone :( nobs :(

Connect the laptop to an external display and see if the lines are still there. If yes, then there's probably something wrong with the video card.

If it's overheating, then it should only happen after, well, after the system has gotten nice and hot. So if it happens as soon as you boot, it's more likely an actual defect in the vid card or somewhere else.
But if it only happens afterthe system has been in use for a while (especially after gaming), it could be overheating.

    Cheers everyone.

Not overclocked no, seems to be the general opinon then is that the cards bust. It hasn't done it again today since I booted up, but I'm expecting it to happen again.

I've gotta ring the shop on monday, would the general opinon be that there is defintealy a fault and defintealy needs replacing/repairing?

Ironically, I am having the same problem with a X1400. It started with strange lines and then the screen went totally wierd requiring a restart. Its only happened once so far, although when I rebooted it it still had the problem, until I let it cool down a little.

How often has it happened to you? My computer was running all day before it happened (at least 6 hours, possibly 8), and it was running at the lowest clock speeds (powerplay on and CPU at performance on demand).

It's happened about 4 times I'd say. and to be fair, my laptop is on about 12 hours a day.

Switch it on in the morning and don't switch it off again till about midnight.

Sounds like yours was overheating and mines achually overheated causing damage, am I right?

Yep, sounds about right. I think mine was due to the low settings I was running it on. The fan is determined by the CPU temperature, not the GPU, so if the CPU temperature is within range then the GPU can get quite hot because the fan doesn't kick in.

Also, it happened while I was using the machine so I switched it off pretty quickly, if you left it while overheating it could get damaged.

Another question would be drivers? Which version of the catalyst drivers are you using? I am using 6.6!

    Hope this helps!

Well I'm using the latest omega drivers so I dunno what version they are, not the most technically minded :)

And, I just went on bf2 since this has started, performance has DEFINTEALY dropped. Used to get 60fps once the map had loaded and stopped stuttering but now it never stops stuttering and I'm lucky to get 30fps/20fps. Argh, what a pain.

I had a similar problem once. The monitor cable might be loose. Thats what it was on my old lappy.

It seems you are using Catalyst 6.5. It might be a bug that is in both driver sets so perhaps we should drop to Catalyst 6.4 or something.

As for the performance drop, have you checked the powerplay settings? This might be the clue you are looking for as if the card is overheating then powerplay will reduce the speed of the card during gaming. It happens to me during 3D Mark. However, if I turn off powerplay (its in the driver controls - but doesn't work too well with Omega drivers - perhaps install the ATI ones), then everything is good again.

Hmm yeah, I'm willing to try other drivers :) Where can we get the older ones? :D

Powerplay settings - not got a clue but I've turned off AA Vsync and all that in my try tools...

You can get the drivers on the ATI website ( www.ati.com). I will post a direct link when I have found them.

Is the fps constantly low or does it start high and then get low?

Yep, check the external monitor. When my old 9600 M10 went even the boot up screen was filled with random mnemonics before XP loaded.

I had it OCed for 14 months :p

MonkeyHugger, how does your boot up screens look?
