Hey guys, i have been planning to get myself a laptop... Preferably asus n53 sv. But before that, i want to confirm if the gpu on it is upgradable? I have gone through many threads here, but can't find something concrete.

I don't now exactly about this specific laptop but the N53jf has its GPU soldered to the mainboard... I guess it's the same for the N53sv... so the answer would be no.

Even if it was a MXM card, Asus usually uses a proprietary connector which makes it almost impossible to upgrade anything except if the same laptop model is offered with a different card.

Oh..there goes my asus n53sv. Is there any other laptop, that can provide me futureproof gpu upgradability? M looking for something full hd. Thanks a lot mate.

And yeah my budget doesn't allow me to go for alienware. That's one of the constraints. Better it be a quad core.

you could try the sager NP1560, it uses a FHD 15'' screen and possibly the gpu is upgradeable ask at the sager forums to confirm.

Yeah, best chances for upgrades have probably Clevo (and Clevo reseller) systems... but I guess it depends on the model and they're not cheap either, afaik.

Clevo isn't available here in india? How would a dell xps 15 do?

I mean clevo isn't available here...sorry for the question mark.

Acer? They don't have new hd laptops, but if i decide to compromise on full hd, aspire 5950 isn't bad at all.

XPS 15 is not upgradeable. Some Acers are, depends on the model, look over in the Acer board to confirm. Also try looking at the ASUS or MSI G- series laptops.

Yeah, nice machines, but not upgradeable at all GPU wise... (or at least almost impossible due to the proprietary connector)

I did a bit of search and Afaik, clevo isn't available at all here. Same goes for sager. Acer n53sv was a really great piece of machine and i didn't want to give up on it. So now i don't have much options left. May be acer or msi. I will try to find out in their respective forums. Anyways thanks a lot everyone. Really appreciate the good work.

    The NP1560 also isn't upgradable.

AFAIK, 98% of laptops have their video card soldered to the motherboard.

IF you really want an upgradable VC on a laptop, you can try a DIY ViDock, basically, docking a desktop GPU onto a laptop

    @thewhum

M not too informative on diy vdock. As i understood from a few threads, it needs a pci-e slot, right? But i can't find a pci-e slot on n53sv. M i missing something there?

there is a pci-e slot in every laptop, the question is, is there one available?

some people ditch the wi fi module for some gaming than plug it again.

the vdock is not the most reliable thing, but you have here people that can help you. Im thinking of trying that myself.

With a lack of upgradability in the mobile gpu segment, it still seems diy vi-dock is the best available option...unless one is lucky to have a laptop with not-soldered graphics.

What makes you say it's not the most reliable?

MSI systems and also alienware if you can afford it.

It looks like MXM-A is being phased out.
