It just seems crazy to me to spend $60 on the game and then $30 on 2 months of time... that's like $90 out of the gate. Meanwhile, I'm dropping $5 on fallout new vegas on steam.
Anyway, I'm wondering if I can avoid the box fee and just pay my $15 / month. It's the combo that really kills me. The $60 is going to make me feel financially invested, and it'll push me towards keeping that $15 sub. going. If I'm just paying $15/month with a small upfront cost or no cost, I won't feel obligated to keep it going.
Thoughts? If the game comes with 1 month of game-time, I'd be looking for a box copy that costs about $15.

Just wait until it goes F2P

I'm in the same boat as you. Hopefully by the summer there will be a free trial (maybe the box price will drop as well?).

$60 + a monthly fee ? No thank you!

it's sort of crazy- it's like a game for either super rich people, or people willing to drop all other games to play it.
I like bioware. I'd like to play the thing, but I don't see myself investing hundreds of dollars in it over the course of the year. Maybe it'll go F2P eventually like Malignant said. -
Baka thinks that depending on the reception of the people, it can either go become like WoW or goes F2P with limited access unless you pay for full content ._.
Eitherway, Baka still greatly wishes for games to be like Guild Wars. One time payment for an account and play for life ._. -
Watched quite a few videos of SWTOR, and really, I'm not impressed. This is not on-par with what a 2011/2012 MMORPG should be.
Graphics (other than lighting engine) look archaic, animations are abysmal even for MMOs (some of the worst running animations I've ever seen), dialogues are much shallower than single-player Bioware games, world-boss battles are boring because none of these bosses use more than a couple of run-of-the-mill attacks/skills, and apparently there's less end-game content than a typical WoW expansion. -
I bought the collectors edition for 150 dollars and I paid for a 6 month subscription(worth every penny). I think the graphics are beautiful in this game.
I am right now a Level 23 Jedi Sentinel. -
Personally i would like a MMO based on Monster Hunter but sadly that may never happen. -

It's not $30 dollars a month it's 14.99 a month.

does the game come with 30 or 60 days of time? or none?

Haven't tried any world bosses, so no comments on that. End-game content? Pshhht. Operations (raids), high-level Flashpoints (4man dungeons), Warzones (BGs). Operations and Flashpoints are also available in Hardmode flavours. Plus, of course, you can grind out dailies, if that's your shtick.
Or you could just go back and roll some alts. Unlike certain other MMOs, SWTOR actually has fairly well-written main questS. That's right. A different one for each of 8 base classes. Plenty to keep people occupied for some time. New Flashpoints and expanded Operations are coming next month, too.

I got out of business just because of it! ridiculous payment every month, you kidding me?!!

I thought the same regarding the graphics...until I actually played it. Yes, the engine utilizes the same cartoony style that WoW capitalized on. Yes, it's very bright and colorful, and decidedly not cutting edge. But it is NOT the same as a game from 2004(as some people have said). The effects are very well done, the facial expressions and animations are way more advanced, and honestly, I think it does the job well. I think most people would be well served by actually seeing it ingame, and THEN judging the graphics.
As far as gameplay and dialogue, I have heard mostly positive things so far. It doesn't drammatically alter the formula, but it has refined it immensely. Everyone I know that is playing it enjoys it very much, and actually appreciates the story. While there were some great story lines in WoW, most people ignored them in the rush to level up and get raiding/pvping. I think that Bioware has done an excellent job, although we have yet to see how the endgame will play out. -

I think they will milk the cash cow now while they can, but when GW2 comes out and has only an upfront cost and no monthly fee they will have a high probability to go F2P to compete.
Of course they may just stick to Pay2Play due to having people suckered into the game due to friends playing, already investing so much time/effort and not wanting to move on, etc.
The game is very similar to WOW (too much so IMO) and thus has the same kind of addicting characteristics, also they are bound to get some players just due to the fact its the SW universe. -
it will come down in price fairly quickly. i paid 60bux for rift and it was 8dollars with in 3month

I've seen a few listings on ebay for about $40. I was going to buy it until I installed it and logged into a friend's account and realized my computer is too old to play it comfortably...

This is my first MMO and I am having fun playing it. As soon as Mass Effect 3 comes out, TOR will be on the back burner for a while.

I'm playing and having fun with the solo missions, unlike Wow, which I couldn't even be interested enough to get past level 8. Often I group up and have fun doing the 4 man heroics/flashpoints too. The space missions, while linear (literally) are a fun way of mixing things up while still getting xp.
I haven't PVP'd outside of Huttball, which is aggravating because there's often no teamwork, but if I really wanted competitive PVP in an MMO I'd go back to EVE. I don't know if/when Bioware will get around to improving it, but at this point I don't care since the gear you can get, while good in stats, look ugly as hell. -
I think I would have preferred a single-player KOTOR 3 set at $60 from the get go.
-
You know even after paying the upfront fee of $60 the fun I've had playing it with my buddies after work is worth it. We haven't lan partied like we have the past few days in a while and to me I think it's worth every penny. Plus seeing all the gamer rage we get when somebody screws up by having to do a real thing like using the bathroom or answering a phone call
In all seriousness though the game could use some optimizations to run more smoothly and have less glitches but that will be fixed in upcoming patches. I'm disappointed that with a phenom n930 and mobility 5650 I can't run the game higher than low native 1366x768

A great deal of my gamer friends are playing SW and they love it.
We've tried every new MMO since WoW and this is by far the best WoW competitor to ever release.
"Don't knock it until you try it"
Bioware has done such a brilliant job on the story, quests and voice acting that the player becomes attached to their character and actually feels for them. It's so fun that 10 minutes could easily turn into 5 hours without you noticing.
I'd definitely recommend it. It's not like 15$/mo is a big deal ...that's the price of two take-out meals per month ...or a visit to the movie theatre. -
I am not rich but I make enough to live well within my means. If you buy the 6 month membership it turns out to be about 12.99 a month. -

Is there a way to get The Old Republic cheaper? Much cheaper? Nearly free?
