I bought one of the wired xbox 360 controllers for my 360. It was not one of the ones advertised as "for windows" but it has a usb plug on it. I tried plugging it into my computer, my computer detected it, the light on the Xbox button came on for one second, shut off, and then I got a message saying that there was a problem and that the device might not work properly. Is there a way to get it to work with windows, or does it have to be one of the ones that says for windows on the package?

I can't recall my controller having the "for Windows" notice on its box. I simply plugged it in and it started working. Perhaps you can try a different USB port? Also, i see some drivers lingering on the net for xbox 360 controllers. Maybe it is a driver issue (As far as I can remember, mine didn't require a driver).

I think he's using the wireless controller with the charger. The wired controller does not have an indicator light; only the wireless does. The light is to show that power, and only power, is being supplied to the controller.

The Xbox 360 controller doesn't use Bluetooth.

londez, under Vista I just plugged my controller in and it worked instantly. Under XP I recall having to install a driver for the controller. However, last time I checked that driver was no longer available from Microsoft's website. It looked like you had to plug your controller in, run Windows update, and then the driver would appear for installation through there.

I think he means the controller number indicator around the center "big button" which all 360 controllers have.

OP, if that is, in fact, what you mean then it should just work. Maybe need a driver, but most people do not.

If you ARE talking a wireless controller with a plug n' charge cable (which it doesn't sound like you are) then you will need the wireless adapter for windows ( like this) as it does not use the USB for connectivity, just for charging.
