I need to know if this Laptop good for games in 3-4-5 years from now. without counting the detail needed in when the new generation of cards come out as long as the frame-rate runs well and the game looks half-decent.

    Laptop:
    Intel Core 2 Duo T8100 (2.1Ghz, 3MB L2 Cache, 800Mhz FSB)
    3GB DDR2 RAM 667Mhz PC2 5300 Memory (2 GB + 1 GB)
    320GB SATA 4200RPM Hard-Drive (160GB x 2)
17" Crystal Brite View wide XGA display (1440 x 900)
ATI Mobility RADEON HD 2600 with 512 Hyper Memory
    Windows XP.

Its the older model of the N6470A from fujitsu. I really wanted to get the gateway 172S FX but I live in Canada so it would be great if someone could tell me the differences of game performances between these two.

    Thanks in advance

First of all, 3-4-5 years from now, all games will be dx10 or 11 meaning they won't even run in windows xp anymore. Secondly I doubt there is a laptop out there with a video card good enough to run games in 3-4-5 years at decent settings. The HD 2600 is a mid-range graphics card today so you'll probably be lucky to get games running in 3-5 years.

    3-4-5 years?
IMHO you'll need Vista by then (DX10) - why not just get it now, it's fairly stable at this stage and it'll mean you won't have to pay for two OS'es.
Otherwise, well you could probably go for a t8300, it's not much more.

Gaming hardware will always evolve quickly, so even in a year that could/probably will be outdated, but if you can stand lower/lowest setttings later, I think that should do you.

I have a choice of vista or xp and was going to pick XP so if I take vista will this laptop come close to the gateway mentioned in game performances?

3-5 years is too much to ask for.You will probably have a new system after 3 years.

Laptops from 3-5 years ago probably couldn't run any new games well on the lowest settings. I they keep on releasing games like Crysis you will be lucky to last 2 years with that setup.

Get Vista? No. Windows 7 is coming out in 2010, so even Vista will be obsolete. Just stick with what you got and wait until the problems for that OS are ironed out.

well you might want to wait and see how the ATI XPG external graphics turn out. Chances are you will be able to upgrade to the latest greatest down the road with that type of setup. If it catches on then I'm out of the dedicated internal graphics boat.

Well my 3 year old XPS M170 with a go 7800GTX runs Crysis at medium with some tweaking of course :)

I ran Quake Wars on it at 1920x1200 at 30 fps. Actually if you can lower resolutions you should be fine, although a go 7800GTX is pretty fast even today ;)

There's no laptop that will play games released in 5 years from now at decent settings... If you can't get a 8800, at least aim to a 8600M GT, that will last 1~2 years... Or wait a bit, and go for the new 9650M GT which is equal to a 8700M GT...

Unfortunately, it won't play the latest or greatest games for that long. And thats the same case for most laptops out there, except for the most powerful; laptops just don't have the upgradeability or longevity of desktop systems. You'll probably have to replace the unit in that time span, not play the latest games.

to be honest, you should be able to play games in 5 years as long as you don't mind them looking like they do on high settings today. low in the future=todays high settings. MY brother has a 4 or 5 year old gateway with a pnetium m, ati x700 and he still gets away playing several modern games at decent frame rates.
