I'm looking to get a budget gaming laptop and found this one on sale for $539.99. I'd be playing games like World of Warcraft, Star Wars TOR and Battlefield 3.
What kind of performance could I expect with this laptop?

For 539.99, that's a steal. It's about on par with a 540M, which I haven't seen for less than $650. For that price it's really good. It can play all those games fluently except maybe BF3, it's not gonna be anywhere near max settings.
-
BF3 at 720p you can play it on "High Textures" and rest low (wont really notice a difference, THAT much) and youll get around 30-35fps
-
Overclock the CPU, should easily be able to get it at 2.2GHz, overclock the GPU (11.6 and earlier drivers), otherwise newer drivers may offer similar performance without OC, but AMD basically locked the overclock ability after Catalyst 11.6.
The 6650m has GDDR3 video RAM, which is really the biggest bottleneck. But for $539, it's a great bargain. -
Seems the AMD build is good enought for HTWingNut so im getting one for my little brother.
HP Pavilion Dv7-6101 is a little bigger but its not gonna be moved as much.
The specifications are very similar to the one OP talked about.
AMD A6-3410MX
AMD Radeon HD 6750 with GDDR5
8GB RAM
640GB HDD (Might be replaced if its a slow drive)
The AMD Hybrid Crossfire solution should work quite good with Battlefield as its made in DirectX 11.
Im expecting good performance at a budget.

For the money seems good, just dont get a Bulldozer for your desktop

Good Morning Dr. Deagle its Noon for you now isn't it? -
Just woke up 1 hour ago so a bit sleepyheaded but should go away soon.
Its 1°C or 34°F outside and the time is 12:37.
Just glad the snow aint falled yet. -
The 6755G2 is excellent (6520G IGP + 6750m w/GDDR5). And DEagleson, I can help you out getting the GPU overclocked too. It takes running original driver set + modded BIOS for hard coded overclock, because anything after 11.6 Cat you can't overclock with software.
-
In terms of overclocking AMD cards, you can always use ATi tray tools.
-
Yes, but still won't work after Catalyst 11.6. AMD did this because they wanted to restrict overclocking to the "black" edition video cards. Problem is laptop owners are screwed because there are no "black" edition cards to be had!
-
Um... I'm not sure if we're talking about the same thing here. So you mean it will work with the 6990M but not the 67xx series?
-
Perhaps. Maybe the high end mobile chips work with it. Last I tried, nothing would allow overclock past 11.6 with third party apps.
Just gave it a go, and seems it only detects the IGP and can't get it to detect the dedicated card. -
So BIOS OC is the way to go after 11.6?
Il see after December 24th if i can get access to it. :3
My brother only plays Minecraft, Terraria and some F2P games since anything else runs too poor on his Intel x3100 IGP even with custom performance drivers.
But should i open it up and repaste it with IC Diamond just to be safe?
Dont know how bad stock paste is on HP hardware. -
Let me just say that the stock paste is like a piece of cement. It took soaking in alcohol for 15 minutes before I could even start scraping it off. And not sure if the 17" is the same as the 15", but you basically have to disassemble the whole machine to get access to the fan/heatsink assembly. But if you're adept at that sort of thing not a huge deal. Just be sure to get the service manual from HP's site.
That being said, several users of the DV6z have reported excellent temps with stock paste. I just think to maintain good temps over time, repasting with a quality paste is a good idea.
And yes, BIOS OC is pretty much required. If you can find someone to modify the BIOS or know how to do it. An NBR member here named Musho helped us. But if all he's playing is Minecraft and Terraria, stock clocks should be more than adequate. However remember that the OpenGL issue still hasn't been fixed yet. It still reverts to the IGP only. I'll try again when I get a chance, but iirc Minecraft ran well with the IGP. -
Thank you for all the feedback.
So with all the information in this thread, I can expect BF3 played at 1366 to be on low-medium settings, eh? This would obviously change with overclocking or is this with overclocking in mind?
I've read many posts regarding overclocking with this particular CPU/GPU. Could someone teach me how to overclock the CPU? I understand that I'll require MSI Afterburner, but what settings would I input to get the 2.2ghz and beyond out of my CPU?
After reading HTWingnut's post, I guess my best bet is to find a 11.6 and below driver in order for me to be able to overclock my GPU? Is this as easy as doing it to your CPU?
I'm somewhat new to overclocking, so I just need a few poniters
Yeah, it is a good deal. Staples has the Asus k53ta for sale at $539 for another week.
Thanks again for all your help guys, this forum is good stuff! -
Damn shame it cant be OCed with AMD Catalyst Center like my 6970m but as long as the OC is stable i see no reason to OC by modded BIOS.
Il send you a PM once i get my hands on the notebook but it all depends on how much money he saves by the end of the month.
Is this good for modern games? AMD Quad-Core A6-3400 + AMD Radeon HD 6720G2?
