Hi, just wondering if my graphics card is intergrated onto my motherboard or is dedicated through an mxm port.
Just wondering as im wanting to upgrade to a 8600 GT

Your video card is not integrated, but it is not upgradable.
-
if its an mxm card why would it not be upgradable. the bios may prevent it from a 9000 series jump or an ati jump but to go from 8400 to 8600 i dont see why not. can you explain further why you think he may not be able to. I am not saying your a liar or anything just curious why it would not be able to. maybe something i missed.
-
Yes it is upgradable. Its not soldered in.
-
It's dedicated, but I am not sure if it can be upgraded
IIRc most 8400s are soldered to the mobos
Hope this helps -
The reason I said it is not upgradable, even though it might be, is because:
1. Upgrading a videocard requires one to know what they are doing, and be able to tinker around his laptop, and be confident enough not to damage anything. HP has never confirmed their laptops are MXM compatible, but they COULD be.
2. It voids your warranty.
3. Aftermarket videocard upgrades are relatively expensive. They usually start from $250+.
4. If it doesn't work, then you've just wasted time and money on a failed upgrade.
As you have noticed, the works may and could appear frequently, because upgrading a videocard is all but a gamble. -
I'd rep you if I could -
Nevermind, someone else posted my point first

the DV pavilion series all have soldered gpus, i could show you a photo if you like.

I would like to see aphoto.

The bigger chip is the CPU which is socketed, the smaller chip is directly soldered into the board. (and NO theres no chance of it comming off and being upgraded) -
Wicked, no need to waste 250 euro on a failing upgrade then
thanks -
paper_wastage Beat this 7x7x7 Cube
but to do this, it means you have a fairly advanced knowledge of circuitry and other crap... might as well use this knowledge to get a job and buy another laptop with a better graphics card -
Thats replacing not upgrading.
Also desoldering the chip feet is precision job.
Is this intergrated or Dedicated?
