So i play wow, and i have horrible problems with my fps. I have been looking into different options to fix this problem without buying a new comp or doing anything ridiculously expensive. Here is what im working with:

Laptop: Dell Inspiron E1705 running Windows XP
    CPU: Intel Core 2 T5600 @ 1.83 GHz (2CPUs) 988MHz
    RAM: 2046MB
BIOS: Phoenix ROM BIOS PLUS Version 1.10 A09
GPU: 256 MB ATI Mobility Radeon x1400 <--- my problem

From what I have read, with my computer I can replace my GPU, but it looks like something I dont want to mess with.

I ran across a site talking about external video cards as an option to improve performance. And after a bit of searching I found the Vidock 2 with a ATI Radeon 4670. This looks like the fix i have been looking for but im not sure if it will work, which is why im making this post.

My laptop does have a pci express slot, but I have read about some BIOS problems and a few other potential problems.

So I ask all you smart guru people, would this be a smart choice to fix my problem with game performance (specifically fps) and will it work with my computer?

And please give me any other suggestions that you think could work better for me, preferably on the cheaper side.

Thank You for all your help in advance.

And one more thing, would just replacing the video card be the simplest thing to do to just allow me to play at a decent framerate.

And if so would an ATI Radeon Mobility 4670 work with my laptop.
Like would it fit and would there be any cooling issues or anything else to worry about?

Other suggestions of video cards around the $100 range if not cheaper are welcome as well.

DIY ViDock is a cheaper option with more choices for faster video cards since there are no chassis dimension or power supply limitations. If your system has the right port layout it might even be able to do a x2 1.0 link, improving framerates yet again by 30-60%. Here we see testing showing a HD5750 is 33.4% faster than a HD4670 when used in a x1 1.0 setup.

A US$250 PE4L+HD5750+80W PSU being a compact and inexpensive option.

ViDock 2 + 5670, better performance. The main issue would be the classic "error: 12" which occurs when there's not enough memory adressed to the external card - which you can bypass, but it can become complicated.

Check this thread, mainly about an alternative way to the ViDock but the errors and solutions applies either way: http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?p=5324240

    Edit:

    Dammit, wasn't fast enough.

your really better off selling your laptop and getting maybe 100-200$ for it and building a 500$ desktop system.
