Debating between two notebooks extremely similar Except one sports an X 1700 mobility 256 MB running Vista....The other a 7600 Go 512 MB with XP. WOuld the performance halter Vista puts on a video card make the 7600 Go under XP perform better? Or would the X1700 under Vista still outform the 7600?

(Note Cannot install Xp on the Vista machine due to lack of driver support and warranty issues, and Financial constraints)

I believe performance will get better, once more updates are available. I believe XP was in the same boat, when it first came out. I haven't played many games to tell. In the long term, you'll want Vista (since I believe it's not going away anytime soon). If you have XP, install it and you could have a dual-boot setup.

the thing about performance in vista is that the drivers are still beta and quite bad, or at least nVidia ones are, so while the x1700 might perform worse today, that will be rectified.

i recently swapped over to vista, and to say the truth i was expecting much worse performance. The games im playing (CoH, Oblivion, Guildwars) havent had much of a noticable hit at all. btw, usin x1600 and 7.2 cat drivers.

it seems that it is more of a compatibility issue than performance for me. my favorite game right now, dark messiah of might and magic, keeps crashing because it is not compatable with vista. even when i run it in compatability mode it still crashes. im thinking that an update from windows for the O.S. or new drivers from ati will help that. but i am in a wierd situation right now. i have a MR X1900 and there is currently no driver support for it, so as a result the notebook manufactures need to hack some half @$$ drivers. but fabarati is right. it will be rectified.

I have no problems with gaming in Vista (even the old Operation Flashpoint works fine)

    Cheers,
