Ok, just picked this game up lastnight. Is anyone else liking it?

The gameplay seems solid when you watch it online, but when you start yourself, it falls short, at least for me.

    Pros:

    Grapple hook is awesome.
    Aim assist is well done.
    Parachute is awesome.
    Flying is very fun.

    Cons:
Controls. I personally use the Xbox 360 controller, and it is very badly done. Use one, and you will know what I mean. Even the mouse controls seem akward.
Driving is horrid unless you are flying or driving something slower.
    Storyline is meh.

This is ofcourse a personal opinion. Does anyone else feel the same? I had high hopes for this game, and it is fun, minus the cons.

I'm playing it on keyboard and I'm liking it so far. The only thing I can't do well with keyboard is flying a plane, but I would say the controls are pretty good for everything else (it's wayyyy better than the controls for Just Cause 1).

Playing it on max settings 2xAA here (on my desktop) runs really smooth and it looks pretty so I can't complain about it. :) Action is fast paced and good fun. Don't need to care about the story as this game is all about the crazy actions. :p

    My name is Bolo Santosi!

I want to rip her head off. Her accent is grinding on the ears. I can hear the voice actress trolling it up.

    Pros
Pretty much everything you said but aim assist
The cheesy storyline (i hate ninjas!)

    Cons
    The driving
    Some bugs
    The voice acting

I wouldn't take points off for a bad story; to me, this game is pretty much the mechanic of the grappling hook/parachute/sky-diving systems, the uninspired "story" (even the faction ones that are basically copies of one another) is pretty much there just to take you around the island to play with those mechanics, in fact, the island is just one big playground for the player to play with the aformentioned mechanics. So you're pretty much buying the mechanic, and everything else (story, setting, etc) that comes with it are just replaceble devices for you to use the mechanics or to have the motivation to use the mechanics on.

But yes, the voice acting is terrible... just... bad... lol

They did do good on the aim assist, the focus of the game is not to mow down squads of enemies endlessly (although you could), and it's good to see that they acknowledged that by giving a flexible shooting system of having that aim assist, but at the same time, the more experienced shooters can still aim for the head and get head shots.

Vehicles can be a hit or miss here. I've driven sport cars (like the fast red ones they give you in some of those challenges) and I floor it, but it was very easy to spin out of control while turning. I've then started ordering some of the cars from the black market and those handled a lot better imo, I was weaving in and out of traffic with no problems. Aerial vehicles are fine, and naval vehicles too I'm guessing, I don't drive the boats that often.

Visuals are BEAUTIFUL though, but I'm sure you all know that. I don't just mean the nice tropical islands with the beautiful settings with the snowcap mountains and the forests and deserts. I mean things like explosions too, things like those giant communication towers toppling over after their supporting wires have been shot, those great giant explosions behind you when you basejump out of a tower.

This game sounds good too, you can hear your car accelearting/decelerating, gun shot sounds, explosive sounds, the sound of air passing by you as you free fall, that intense music that comes on when you start a challenge, the acoustic guitar riff that comes on when you're just parachuting and leaving it.

The controls are fine, some people have complaints of mouse lag but I haven't had that problem, I'm able to execute everything very smoothly. It's definitely something that takes getting used as I am moving faster and more efficiently than when I started up the game. But once the controls become second nature, it's beautiful to simply execute what you want to, when you want to.

This game is buggy, definitely, one of the downsides for having so much freedom. At least there's no penalties for dying? That's how I usually get out of my bugs, just get killed *shrug* pick up where I left off.

It's certainly not a game that I want to weigh the pros and cons of, because frankly, I feel like that will depress me. It lacks so much of what other games have.

But, it's FUN! And that's truly all that matters to me.

FUN in the way old games were fun. When stories were an afterthought, gameplay was first and foremost, and was well-executed, and well . . . FUN.

I've had it since release day and enjoying it. You shouldn't come in expecting an epic story from a game like this, its all about running around and having fun.

For the first 10 hours or so I didn't do anything but the opening mission and then explore and do stunts. And after that got tired, I started actually playing the missions.

I love this game as a whole, but there are a few cons that could be improved upon.

    • Views, I wish you could change the views in person/vehicles like the gta series.
    • Choppers are extremely too slow.
    • Nearly impossible to aim guns/rockets in fighter jets, needs a targeting system.
    • Lack of ammo.
    • Black Market prices.

Other than that, I'm pretty happy with the game. As for the controls I also play with a 360 pad on pc, and don't mind the set up. I takes a little while to get used to the controls, but once you do its all good. :)

These guys got it, good wording too, I've been hearing people go "What's the objective?", "What's the point, why am I blowing stuff up?", "Why can Scorpio do this/that -- how is that possible?". If you're asking these questions, this game is either not for you or you're asking the wrong questions.

I actually haven't been having too many problems with the Black Market prices, in fact i've got at least 10 million now (30% completion), granted, I'm pretty conservative. My style of playing is more "I'm gonna go in with no weapons/ammo, all I've got is my hook and my environment, let's see how much damage I can do!" rather than "Let's order some guns and make sure I'm fully stocked up on health and equipment before I tackle this" so I guess it depends, I like my style though :D it's more adventurous and you feel like a when you walk out of a smoking base with some new guns.

But I agree that there's a lack of ammo, even with SMG's which I think are pretty common, I run out for them all the time.

I can't believe the game runs so smooth and is so lightweight compared to most games nowadays (it's just a single layered dvd)

I'm playing this game @1920x1200, 4x AA, 8x AF on high texture, medium shadows and Very High Water and Objects and get very smooth 30+ fps. Looks great too, and seems to be a fun Mercenaries 1 type game :)

I would also like to point out that Just Cause 2 has Thai characters in it; I know this because . . . well . . . I am Thai. Of course, they actually make no comprehensive sense. Sometimes, Thai numbers are found right in the middle of "words!" 4,5, and 7 seem to be pretty popular in mid-word =P. If I can actually read half of the things in the game and they make NO SENSE, and I still HAVE FUN, that's saying something about how intoxicatinly enjoyable the gameplay is.

Thai's not the only alphabet in the game though; an example of letters from the Thai alphabet are the letters in the Panau news as it comes up on the PDA, or the writing on some of the military choppers.

Roadsigns aren't in Thai alphabet, though . . . wonder if anybody knows what they are in.

the game is hilarious good fun, finished the main mission arc with only 34% overall completion.... if there is one thing i have a gripe with is that the helicopters, planes and boats are REALLY slow. The only plane that flies at a decent speed is my fully upgraded plane from the black market.

All - For those that purchased the pc=dvdrom, I know it requires Steam activation, after that does it require the disc to be in drive or can you leave it in the box at that point? Thanks, StevenX

The game is pretty ok, not that innovative to me and the grappling hook magically being able to pull your whole weight anywhere even if you're falling straight down feels pretty awkward to me. I guess I'm more into some feeling of semi-realism than just mindless fun now when it comes to gaming. Maybe some mods will change my mind :_)

And you're doing that on your Desktop obviously right? Don't think that laptop could pull those settings out of Just Cause 2 unless running on a very low rez.
