is it absolutely necessary to own a cooling system to OC ur laptop? or can i do it without one?

When i play my games my GPU can reach 72 degrees on max and 68~ degrees for the value. (celcius)

If i take it to far will i get..."artifacts" whatever that means? or will my notebook purposely crash before any harm is done?

    Thx!

Well, yeah, you SHOULD have a cooling pad, if you're stupid or stubborn you don't need one. Just let your card fry.

Yes, you will get artifacts if you take it too far, which are little things in your screen, its like tearing.

You need to keep the laptop under certain temperatures to keep the components from frying.

    Artifacts are errors in processing.

A notebook will shut down automatically once it reaches critical temperatures.

I highly advise to avoid overclocking if you didn't know the answers to these questions.

im waiting until i order my Zalman NC2000 cooling pad then i will start overclocking. I use CPUID to check my temperatures :)

    Thanks for the advice guys!

dont it feel annoying to use a coolpad with fans etc. if u put one of those under ur laptop it gets like 15 cm taller and very uncomfortable and each time you go somewhere u have to bring the cooling pad or clock down ur card. sounds really annoying too me

I find the annoyance better than my laptop on fire.

    1) It is not necessary, but you should measure (AtiTool or RivaTuner) your temperatures as you overclock, some laptops/GPUs may have a higher increase in temperatures when overclocking than others. For example, I can overclock up to 28% the stock clocks in my GPU and my max temperatures goes from 69 to 73 celcius. I don't use any cooling system.

    2) Your GPU temps seem reasonable.

    3) If you overclock too much you will see artifacts (graphical errors). You should read about how to overclock before doing it yourself.

Edit: This link goes to my results and analysis of overclocking, it describes a way on how to overclock and what to use: http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=225279

    I hope this can help.

    Are artifacts "reversible"

but if u forgot ur cooling pad u gotta clock down ur card and if u bring ur laptop out at the bus u gotta bring the cooling pad there as well.

It would be the same as carrying your desktop on the back and play it on the bus. Not practical at all.

i mean if u gonna have to carry a cooling pad wherever you go you might as well just carry a desktop on your back, with a huge battery attached to it. A desktop gives you better performance as well and if u need a big cooling pad to chill of ur laptop then whats the point with a portable laptop anyway?

Lets say u ar going on a bus ride and u wanna game, then u gotta bring the coolpad and all that stuff as well. If you have to do that why not take the whole desktop to the bus with a huge potable battery so u can power that 1000W PSU up lol.

What I said was. are artifacts reversible (still unanswered).

Heres wat the other guy said (translated into modern english)

Taking a laptop cooler everywhere can be annoying and can cause alot of trouble when ur taking it on and off the bus. However, you can still overclock your laptop without one because you can just turn down the clock speeds after if it doesnt work out.

    Thats what i understood

Or hit "battery mode". If you're running your GPU at full away from an outlet, you're doing it wrong.

Artifacts go away if the GPU is not permanently damaged.

I think you are getting the wrong idea. Artifact does not means damage in any sense. Like it was posted in the first page, the are the results of data not processed in the proper manner.

If your question is 'can I get rid of artifacts once I found them?', the answer is yes. Just reduce the clocks until you find no more artifacts. As a comment: you should test your system for no artifacts for a reasonable amount of time. If you don't find anything after 10 minutes, it does not mean you will not get anything later. Since I play usually at ~1 hour intervals, then I would test my OC'ed clocks for about 1 hour.

Anyway if u need a coolpad u might as well just bring ur whole desktop like these guys.

Yeah, or on that brilliant note I should just stick it in my cooler full of ice right?

    ???

How about because keeping the temps down increases the lifespan of your computer? Or that it allows for a better OC. Or that you can always set your machine to "battery saver mode"?

BTW, my cooling pad weighs a few ounces, and my carrying case has a special compartment for it.
