Holy Moly!
I finally made the jump to buy Empire Total War. I couldn't wait any longer, so did a purchase on Steam. When I went to install, I thought I saw 1500MB... but it's 15000MB! Now the wait is on even longer.
What makes this game so large in size? I mean from what I've read a lot of the units look identical, the terrain can't be that massive, and the AI needs work. Sooooo, what am I missing here?
And people were thinking the 70GB for the entire planet earth to be mapped accurately in X-Plane was large! Whoa.
I guess we will need BR PC drives sooner than expected.

yeap It took me 3 complete days to download with my crappy 512 kbps
but its worth it, the naval battles are just amazing

WHAT?! OMG! Why is it that large?!
This is the next step for consumers....BIGGER HARD DRIVES
I think we need to start seeing notebooks that start at around 200-250gb HD and go all the way up to 1TB built in. I have some space lef tin my gateway but i know for certain by year end it'll all be gone. -
Aren't the largest notebook HDD's right now 500GB?
And now I'm pissed that you can't buy the boxed version and register it on Steam. I was at Best Buy today and was going to buy the boxed version, but wanted it on Steam, so said I'd wait. Not only that, even at 15GB to back it up is a pain too. It would have been nice to pay the $50 retail and have quality DVD's that it was written to instead of taking up 15GB of my backup hard drive space or putting it on crappy DVD-R's. -
Yea, steam needs to begin letting you activate any retail CD key (that has not been activated and is legit) for any game they offer... that would make my life... no joke.
P.S. WHAT?! hmm, looks like i'm buying it at bestbuy! xD -
Good choice aan310!
I wish I knew this ahead of time. I guess if I had payed more attention, I would have. But I guess I never thought it would be that large (I wish more women would tell me that - lol).
But again, does anyone know what makes up a majority of that file size? I guess I'll have to do a TreeSize Free analysis when done to see what's up. -
Brendanmurphy Your Worst Nightmare
I bought it on monday took me 8 hours to download. The game is beautiful lets just leave it at that
-
well, my guess (because Medieval 2 was liek 10gb) is that it is the fact that there is so many different models, maps, terrains, ect. And the AI must be HUGE (the AI programming) and i think the in game videos are 1080P (don't quote me on that though)
-
From reviews I've read, a lot of the units look the same, and the AI has awful pathing issues. So not sure if that really justifies the 15GB! Oh well, it is what it is.

Actuallly it tella you before you download all the way in the bottom in this really FINE lettering it says how big it is it says 15gb and something about NTFS steam games for some reason are roughly double the size of disc games Bioshock on my system is 6gb.......why?! I dont understand that. -
lol is it just me or are games these days getting ridiculously big in size
-
you do know if you by the boxed version you still have to have 15gbs for it to install in
-
Yeah they need 1TB standard lol... Well I have a 1TB external hard drive so I guess I'm somewhat fine... esata helps also.
-
I thought sure sure it would run off a 64MB Lexar Jump Drive...
Silly me. -
better
10chars -
because look at the bioshock folder after installing... the game is uncompressed after it is installed
-
Yes it IS.
Why isn't *ANYONE* using the .produkkt technique. Download this 96KB game (yes 96 KB) called .kkrieger and you will be astonished. Ok, the game sucks, it's basic, but it proves a point. Why do we need 20GB of textures when it can be created from a 96KB file?
I'm just surprised this technology hasn't caught on.
http://www.theprodukkt.com/kkrieger -
lmao that thing takes up 300mb of ram while running, all from a 96kb file?
-
Wow that's very interesting! I've never heard of it before.

I downloaded it in 1.5 hrs. Actually I took my laptop to my university in the evening like around 9 when there will be no one. And I downloaded with the speed of 28mbps. It was reasonable.

hey foosa123, what abt using DAP?
I think it will boost the speed X10 as well as resume. -
Did you play Medieval 2 Kingdoms htwingnut? Almost every review said that the expansion was a HDD hog with the 3-4 special scenarios taking up roughly the same space as the current Total War incarnation.
Considering the amount of detail the developers pack into the ship textures, maps and unit animations it shouldn't be too surprising. The 1st MTW which I own actually weighs in at nearly 10GB with the original and Viking invasion expansion installed, no mods and no save games. -
Idk... you'd think that with 15 gb of space, they could've at least fit in a decent ai.
-
We can't have it all I suppose, not many games come with AI like Stardock's Galactic Civilizations series.
There's always the inevitable GB sized patches for this game to fix the numerous bugs and problems I'm sure. -
Yeah, I find it very interesting. Amazing textures from such a small package.
BTW, I'm assuming you're a SJ Sharks fan based on your avatar!? Looks like it will be a tough contention between the Wings and Sharks in the playoffs! It'll be a gritty conference finals if we meet there! I'm an avid Red Wings fan. -
heh, the battles aren't all that easy...even on normal hahaha...at least for me.
-
wait, so you can't buy retail and then just register the key on Steam? I thought that was part of the whole Steamworks thing that it uses no?
Ala FEAR 2 (Steam required as well), bought retail, entered key, and boom, tied to Steam account... that not the case with Empire? -
You can buy retail but it still requires you to connect to Steam for registering and auto-downloading updates (2 thus far, third coming next week).
BTW any of you that have been playing Empire - could you let those of us in the market know what type of FPS you're getting on what settings, as well as your laptop specs???
Thanks! -
I will be testing on four:
Asus N10J: Atom 1.6GHz (o/c 2.1GHz), 9300m GS, 2GB DDR2 RAM, XP Pro SP3
Gateway P-7811FX: P8400 2.2GHz, 9800m GTS, 4GB DDR3, Vista Home Prem 64bit
Compaq Presario CQ60: Core 2 Duo 2.26GHz, Intel GMA x4500MHD, 2GB DDR2, Win 7 beta
Dell Vostro 1500: Core 2 Duo 2.2GHz, 8600m GT, 2GB DDR2, XP Pro SP3 -

Let me know how this game runs on your N10J Htw thanks
-
The demo was playable with all settings on low with Atom o/c'd to 2.1GHz. I hear the final product is vastly improved performance-wise from the demo, so I'm hopeful. Strange thing is that system requirements state "minimum 1024x768 resolution" for display, but it detected and ran with the native 1024x600. Not sure if the full game will though, I'm hoping. I'm backing up my Steam game now, and will slowly but surely get it on all my machines to test.

That sounds great i guess that really is a Super Netbook.
-
We will see. I don't know if a full campaign will work considering the number of units. Too bad they don't have a turn based option. That would be better for slower PC's.
Anyone know a way to get a consistent benchmark? This game would benefit from one. -
Your assumption is correct!
We really need to be first in the conference come playoffs because we really can't beat the Red Wings in Detroit. It just doesn't happen for some reason. Home ice would be great for us. But first, they need to get out of their little slump! Nonetheless, playoffs should be exciting as always
Ok, back on topic
-
Funny, I could repeat the exact same thing you just said but swapping team names. SJS are a team to be reckoned with, and the Wings are really struggling as of late, especially Osgood. Gave up 8 goals in two games. But as in the past, I'd rather see them struggle at the end of the season and iron out the bumps then, and go into the playoffs with a solid strategy...
Oh yeah, back on topic ...
I am installing Empire Total War on several machines to check out performance... yeah that's it. -
hmm i had thought about installing it on several machines but wasnt aware that it could be done i find this thread very informational and...... im very excited about it didnt get a chance to look at the whole thread its long will check it out though
-
Heh, I live in the Bay Area and am a Sharks fan as well.
But back on topic, ETW is probably going to be the first game I install when I get decide to get my new laptop.
Just bought Empire Total War on Steam - 15GB!!??
