Basically,
I have an xps m1530
specs :
4gb ram
geforce 8600m gt 256mb
250gb sata hard drive 5400rpm
2.4ghz core 2 duo processor
I play Crysis on around medium and some high settings and get like 15-20fps, If im doing well !
What could I be potentionally be getting if I overclock my graphics card?
Also what are the main risks of overclocking, I know the graphics card works harder and so gets hooter, is it prefered if I play the system on one of them fan stands to cool my laptop?
Im a noob at this kinda stuff so anyhelp would be greatful, Im kinda precaucious as my laptop is kinda new and I dont want to bust it !
Any things I should be considering before attempting to overclock??
Or Even better, anyone know what settings I should set my laptop to so I dont have to try out loads of combinations??
Thanks for reading,
Kind regards, Jaboyle![]()

Get some real information on how far other people with the Dell 1530 equiped with an 8600M GT have overclocked their GPUs. My last notebook I would overclock the GPU (a GeForce Go 7200) but I'm farely certain it's my OCing that prematurely killed my WiFi card first (due to proximity temperature) then eventually leading to my GPU wearing out.
These 8-series GPUs seem much more capable at taking added heat and clock cycles then previous GPUs. Many gaming branded laptops now have built in overclocking for the GPU AND CPU. Then again a Dell is a Dell, they don't like you messing too much with stuff like that. And consider that your warning because you'll be voiding your warranty. -
Just a few opinions I have on overclocking:
Overclocking a budget gaming desktop which was specifically built with OC'ing in mind (lots of cooling) makes perfect sense. You can build a rig with twice the performance at half the price (if designed properly).
OC'ing a laptop on the other hand is a little more risky. OC'ing is constrained by 2 main things: stability and heat; neither which you have any control over in a laptop. Going too heavy on an OC for a desktop means you need a new $150 GPU. Going too heavy on an OC on your laptop means bye bye $1500 laptop. -
you can do quite alot of overclocking on that laptop if you're willing to get a laptop cooler. Im doing 680/890 with temps around 80!

Just remember, be sure to monitor heat.
OC'ing is fine as long as you don't go crazy and not monitor the side-effects.
Also, do NOT just change to something like Wiley's OC right away.
Wiley has tested and moved up little by little... do NOT set that baby to that high right away! (Wiley also has a cooler....)
Note, wiley that's a very nice OC... question... is the 6043 at 1280x1024?
Just some questions on Overclocking ? !
