Yep, and the great thing about it was all the former employees at Turtle Rock studios got jobs with Valve.

Yes, development of Division 9 started before L4D, so it could well be a copy.

From what I've read, they got the idea from playing with Counter-Strike: Source bots, fighting mobs of bots armed only with knives.

What does Turtle Rock Studios have to do with the possibility that Valve used Irrationals idea for a Zombie game ?

Turtle Rock has nothing to do with Irrational Games !

Turtle Rock Studios created Left 4 Dead, so Valve could not have copied the idea to create Left 4 Dead.

In short, L4D was not Valve's idea. Therefore, Valve did not get the idea of L4D by means of copying (they didn't get it by means of anything, they didn't get the idea at all, it was Turtle Rock)

Developer commentary in L4D says that the idea came from fighting hordes of knife-wielding bots in Counter-Strike Source.

I think you can see that in the game too. Of course, it is built on the source engine, so that may have a bit to do with it, but...

the game absolutely feels like counter strike. not only the engine and graphics, but just something about the whole design of the game makes it seem like it came from CS roots.

whereas the zombie tech demo built off of swat had something really different going on feeling wise. close quarters terror versus (literally) CS knife hordes.

thats what I was thinking. a lot of L4D is open areas where tons of zombies come at you at high speed, and you also move at high speed. it's so different from the CQ zombies and closed in areas... something to think about I guess, I don't think I'm getting across what I'm thinking 1:1 here, but I'm trying.

basically, based off the feel of the game, I absolutely believe it was inspired by CS knife hordes.

even before L4D, there was the zombie mod for CS:S, which itself took a long time and some type of inspiration to create

It's not as if it was ever supposed to be the most original concept in the world, the game is one big reference to every zombie film out there, the humour revolves around nods towards established cliches. The class act was bringing the concept into the Steam multiplayer framework.

CS:S Zombie maps are pure awesomeness.
Either way, "if" L4D was a copy, they sure did a great job doing it. :)

Isn't division 9 just SWAT 4 with a new enemy type? At least at the stage they had it when they quit.
