I'm having an issue with L4D2 where it keeps forgetting the settings I make. Every time I start the game I have to re-enable multicore rendering, turn the microphone to always on instead of push to talk, and so on... does anyone have any idea why this is?

Might have something to do with steam not being able to sync with the steam cloud. Try disabling it.

Same thing happened to me, but with Mass Effect. I just reinstalled it.

Weirdest part is that it's kept half of my settings... it keeps it at 1920x1080 full resolution and all, but just won't save the little things

I notice the same thing. What do you have for your shader settings? I noticed that when i set it to low and turn on multi-core rendering, when i exit and go back into the game the multi-core rendering is off. It won't turn off when you have shaders set to medium.

Huh. My shaders are set to low. I shall go test that forthwith.

Edit: That did it! Thanks tasty_chicken. Very odd that that would happen. Might have to submit a bug report to Valve about it.
